Entered into contract with Compac for my move from Auburn, MA to Bismarck, ND.  Spoke with Guy and seemed genuinely interested in helping.  Gave $200 deposit on July 6, 2009 and set delivery date for July 31, 2009.  Had to call week before to move up date and was told no problem.  When I was called the day before to let me know the time, I was told between 1 and 2 pm.  They were almost 5 hours late arriving.

Toward the end of the packers putting everything on the truck one of them comes up to me and tells me that I have more weight than was estimated.  I told him it was impossible because I did not take half of the items that I originally planned so there was no way.

The following Monday Val called me and told me that my weight was over 4000 lbs and it was going to cost me almost double what was originally estimated.  I told him that was impossible but he insisted.  I told him I can't pay that so then he said he would only charge me for 3000 lbs and packing materials.  I asked when my furniture would be delivered to ND.  I told him I will have a final destination on that Friday.  Val told me that as long as the furniture was going to the same city he would put the furniture on the truck that day and I could call on Friday with the address.

I called Friday with the address and was told that my furniture was still in the warehouse. When I questioned this and said I was told by Val that my furniture was going to be sent out on Monday, Val became very verbally abusive to me and using foul language basivcally said that he said no such thing even though I have every conversation documented.  Guy said that no one at the company would say such a thing because they do not send out furniture without a final destination on file.  I asked when my furniture would be delivered and was told that it would be put on a truck that day and I was to call on Monday for a ETA in Bismarck.

I called on Monday and was told again that my furniture was still in the warehouse and would not be put on a truck unitl Tuesday.  I asked why and was told because they were waiting for another load to come to ND.  Val's exact words were, "No one wants to go to North Dakota so we can't just make a special trip for you."  I asked why they took the job if they didn't want to make the trip to ND and he said they needed the business. Val told me to call back on Tuesday for the ETA to ND.

I called on Tuesday morning and was told that my truck left Monday night and would be in North Dakota by Friday or Saturday and I was to call back in two then three than four hours for a final time.  I called back in six hours just to make sure they would have a time and was told that they did not have a time but the truck will be in Bismarck ND by the weekend.  I was told that someone would call later in the week with a day and time but most likely Saturday.

No one has called me with any kind of information.  I have been calling them up to three times a day and have been leaving messages for someone to call me.  Nothing.  Today is Friday and according to them my furniture should be here tomorrow Saturday, August 15, 2009.  I have emailed them and asked for information but nothing yet.  So far it has been 17 days when I was told it would only take 7 days and they are charging me over $500 more.  It has cost me more than that to put a roof over my son's head and to feed him because all of my household goods are acked.  Also all of my work clothes and my son's school things.  I have had to pay to replace necessary items so we could at least live.  I actually have no intention of paying the additional money mainly because I don't have it because I have had to survive while these people have my stuff.

furniture delivery

my furniture was delivered on 8-18-09 with much more drama than was needed.  The driver was rude due to the fact that I paid the remainder of the so called balance with a cashiers check instead of cash.  I told the driver that I was not going to have him go back to the company and tell them that I did not pay the full balance.

They wanted an additional $150 because I live on the 3rd floor.  My brother and a friend had the movers take the furniture up the first flight of stairs and they took it the rest of the way.  The movers also did not honor the fact that they were suppose to reassemble the furniture which I ended up doing myself.

Upon delivering my furniture, the movers broke a leg off an antique end table and broke one my kitchen chairs.  They apparently tried to fix it with tape as there is tape wrapped around the spindels.  The also lost 3 boxes which contained pots and pans, kitchen cooking utenils and spices and tupperware, and one containing bed linens and towels.  They also broke the screen on my microwave.  Many of the boxes were crushed and ripped open.  I don't now if these problems were the movers or the delivery drivers but I want restitution for all of my missing and broken belongings and for the pain and suffering they caused me.

I was promised that my furniture would be delivered in 7 days and it took them 22 days.  I have a 13 yr old son that I needed to care for and ended up spending much more money that necessary to stay alive.  I want this moving company to learn that just because a single woman moves by herself they cannot take advantag of her and use and abuse her.  They were rude and they were abusive both verbally and mentally.  I want restitution and I want them to feel it where it counts.

I'm in a similar situation and also still don't have my things. I've posted my own report and also contacted State Consumer Protection Board for assistance.

Their address is
5 Empire State Plaza, Suite 2101
Albany, NY 12223
www.nysconsumer.gov

They reviewed the complaint and forwarded it to Federal Motor Carrier Administration.
address:
1200 New Jersey Ave SE
Washington, DC 20590

I was contacted by Edgar, a representative of that agency. He said action should be taken within 30 days and that other victims of this company should contact him as well. The number that was given to me is 888-368-7238.

Please file your complaint. Perhaps something can be done if there are several customers who are victims of the same scam.

Thanks.

Compac moving is not answering messages or emails

#6

Sat, August 15, 2009

I emailed Compac yesterday plus called twice and asked for someone from the company to call me back.  I asked them to be courtious and professional as I do not deserved to be verbally abused by anyone.

Today I received a phone call from the driver of the moving truck saying that he will be in Bismarck on Tuesday morning August 18, 2009 with my furniture.  I told him that Val from Compac said that my furniture would be in Bismarck on Saturday August 15, 2009.  He said that was impossible because he only left New Jersey on Wednesday.  I told him that when I called Compac  on Tuesday afternoon that Val told me that my furniture was already on the road.

Then the driver informed me that I need to pay an additional $150 because I live on the third floor.  He said it was in the contract.  I told him that I read every section of all the paperwork that I was given and there is nothing on there about paying because I lived on the third floor. He said he is just contracted with Compac and that is what he always gets paid.

He then told me to have the $1200 in CASH plus the extra $150 when he delivers the furniture.  I was told that it was to be paid by money order or cashiers check.  I don't know what to do as I have had to tap into the money that Compac  is trying to take me for because I needed to feed and house my son and myself.  It has now been 17 days and counting. I am afraid that they are going to keep my furniture and household goods and I am going to be totally out of everything.

Compac already has $1000 of mine and I have explained all of this to them and they say it's not their fault.  I have complied with everything on my end, they are the ones who aren't telling the truth.  I have offered to pay Compac the money that was originally agreed upon because of all this mess they are causing.  I have yet to hear from anybody.  They are not answering my emails or responding to my phone messages.  I have also told them that it is unprofessional and cowardly to avoid and ignore me.

Pay The Money

#6

Fri, August 14, 2009

You don't really have a choice.  They will not unload the truck unless you pay before the truck is loaded.  If this cost you more, that's unfortunately too bad for you.  The mover can sue you for breach of contract if you don't pay, lock your items in storage, and you'll pay for the storage charges.

One of the other things you should know is that a mover has 30 days from the promised date of delivery to deliver your items.  That's Federal law, and small scam movers like this one generally use every possible day available to deliver your items if there is no other load headed in that direction.  If you chose this mover because they happened to be the cheapest, you should not have chosen them.  As it is, you will pay more than what the most expensive mover would have charged you.  Why?  A mover doesn't make much on every move - maybe 5% profit.  So if someone quotes you a price that's 15%-20% cheaper.....you're going to get scammed for the difference and then some.

Moving is not an inexpensive venture and choosing a mover based on price will cost you more by the time the move is completed.  Pay the additional amount and hope none of your items are damaged beyond repair....
