I had some noise coming from my 97 Dodge Dakota. It sounded like it was coming from underneath the vehicle. I took my truck to a transmission shop, Chet & Mick's in New Port Richey, Florida and he said that I probably needed my transmission rebuilt.

I went to Aamco for a second opinion and they brought in a pan (which they said was from my truck) that had metal flakes in it. They advised me that it was dangerous to keep driving it the way it was and that I should leave it with them and it would cost a minimum of $1500. I told them I couldn't leave it with them. I ended up taking my truck to my step father's step son who is a certified mechanic and he told me I didn't need a new transmission. The noise that I was hearing was my water pump flapping in the wind. In addition, he checked the transmission pan and mine had never been removed from the truck and was 1/2 the size of the pan they showed me.

Luckily, I wasn't ripped off but it wasn't because they didn't try. This was several months ago and my transmission is still going strong. I sent a letter to the Better Business Bureau and basically called me a liar even though I had the estimate they gave me.
