After receiving, from ConEdison, information explaining that Accent energy offered a guaranteed 7% lower rate than ConEdison, with lower eco impact, we switched and have seen a 200% increase in our energy costs. With no changes in lifestyle, no changes made to the wiring, no additional electronic devices of any kind, we are being told that we use twice the energy we once did, and have discovered that while Accent promises a lower per KwH charge, they do not publicize at all the fact that their rate is in addition to very high, variable fees that ConEdison's per KwH includes. Accent also must include in their costs various taxes that ConEd is exempt from paying - and we have gone from paying about 18 cents/KwH from ConEdison (all included), to paying 25 cents/KwH from Accent. The statements on ConEd.com claim that our bill for this month is $85.00 (about what it was this month last year, when we still had ConEdison), and the fees bring it to $230.

Accent Scam

I have had a similiar experience with Accent. They called, said that I had a choice of who "delivers" my electricity, and now for my one bedroom apartment in manhattan my charges went from $85 last July to $205 this July! It is all accents delivery charges, while my coned bill remained almost the same. Anyone that has any idea how they got away with this, i would love to hear. Also, I would love to find a way not to pay their charges, but figure it would take more time than its worth, and will try the posted suggestion for how to stop getting ripped off sooner than later.

Easy Solution for instantly getting rid of Accent

After calling ConEdison and Accent to switch our service back to ConEdison, we received a letter in the mail from ConEd's Retail Choice Operations department, explaining that it could take until early August (switch request made June 2) to beginning receiving ConEdison bills again.

Since we cannot afford another two months at Accent's unreasonably high, misadvertised rates, we called ConEdison and cancelled our service, effective immediately. In the same phone call, we opened a new ConEdison account under the name of our roommate.

Because I assume Accent cannot charge us for use after the account has been cancelled, we're hoping this has returned us to billing from ConEdison immediately.

I will update this report promptly with any more information, but I would recommend this route to anyone unwilling to be held hostage by Accent until they decide to release your account.
