Across The States Vanlines Low-Ball Scam Brooklyn New York
Let me begin by saying that I hate all the cranky negative reviews/ rants on the internet and that I have never before posted one. Let me also say that I was connected with these guys through a web site that gives your moving job to a number of companies to offer competitive bids on. It sounds like a good idea in kind of a crass capitalist way but it incentives the companies to low-ball their bid to get the job and then find ways to jack up the price. This is exactly what happened to be.
They were nice on the phone and offered full service but as soon as the movers showed up they started rolling there eyes and saying how I was way over the space I was quoted (I hadn't even begun to show them the items I got the quote on). I, fortunately, have my own van and had a flexible schedule so I told them to see if they could just fit the big stuff and let me take the rest but once they realized that I wasn't going to just let them jack the price up endlessly they told me to cancel the job and took off. I called the office and tried to figure out what happened but was told that there was nothing they could do and blew me off.
The whole experience was inconvenient for me but not a disaster because I had other options. I can imagine it being very bad for someone who had to move right then.
The people I hired to replace these guys were much more hard-nosed about their quote (especially after I told them what happened) asked for quite a bit more and didn't promise me a rose garden (guess what. Turns out it's cheaper if you pack yourself) but they seem like reasonable people trying to run a business (we'll see).
Across the States is either desperate or simply a scam.
