Active Renter is a property management company based in Phoenix Az. I signed a 1 year lease with this company to rent a property in Maricopa, Az.  Active Renter was provided with proper notice ( OVER 30 Days) that I did not plan on renewing my lease. In my letter to them, I made it clear that I would like my security deposit returned and provided a ship to address.

Fast Forward - Active Renter advised that they were not going to return my security deposit and were charging me a little over 2k for property damages. When renting a home, it is obviously assumed that there would be normal wear however I was outraged to find out that they were making suck claims. When I received a summary of deductions, one of the things that really caught me off guard was the fact that they were trying to add a $25.00 USD charge for changing a battery in a smoke dedector. ( $25.00 USD REALLY??)

As I felt that this was a serious injustice, I filed a complaint against this company in small claims court. The outcome was found in my favor, granting me a portion of my security deposit back and ordering Active Renter to pay my legal fees.

I am filing this report to warn others about this company and how little integrity the staff have. I would never recommend anyone renting or doing business with this Property Management Company. There are others out there that will treat you like a good tenent deserves.

I also would like to let people know that it is very important to understand your rights as a tenent and not to be afraid to challenge your landlord in court. SLUM LORDS Do Not Belong In Business.
