ADT Tyco Fire And Security No relief from Contract when service ceased Boca Raton Florida
I signed a contract for ADT alarm service at my home. Six months prior to the contract ending I sold my home. I attempted to move the service to my new house.
ADT's installer came to the new home and said that he could not install a system due to the age and materials used to build my new home. I subsequently was billed the full $30+ although I was not using ADT's service and had no means to use their service.
I called numerous times to get this fixed. The company was unsympathetic. I never will deal with ADT again.

Cellular backup not the only way to go.

Yes, getting a cellular backup to your phone is not a bad idea, however, there are other options out there if you're looking for added security. It may not be well advertised that you can also get a radio backup unit with ADT, which is provided by Honeywell/Alarmnet. Occasionally reception is an issue, but if so, a technician can place the antenna on your roof and/or install a high-gain antenna. You can also make the radio system the primary means of communication and have the phone line as the backup means. But whether you go with radio or cellular, just pick one, redundancy is a good thing.
On a side note, please don't yell at someone from ADT calling you at insane hours of the morning, these are dispatchers, not telemarketers. (ADT's telemarketers are not at work at 3 am) The dispatcher's job is hard enough as it is without having to endure you yelling at him/her. And yes, they sound like robots, but would like nothing better than to talk to you like a normal human, but if they don't follow the greeting script exactly, our QA department will get a bug up their three-letter-word-starting-with-a. If you don't have an alarm system monitored by ADT, they're calling you because someone has your number on an emergency contact list. Let them finish telling you what they're calling for, and if the person they're calling for is not there, or, worse, if they don't live there and you've never heard of them, tell the dispatcher, and they will log a request to have your number removed from that particular contact list. (They would do it themselves, but they don't have access to edit accounts, only to call emergency services and contacts.)

ADT WIll Eventually Correct The Problem

When working for them as a salesman, I always had the customer call and speak directly with either a sales manager, or customer service rep. While at ADT, the installation department never seemed to want to do anything other than infuriate the sales rep's. and customers when there happened to be a tough situation.
I worked with some real professionals in the installation department, but unfortunately they weren't installation managers. Take your problem directly to the sales manager for resale or new installations. They usually will try their best to work something out.
With wireless now being an option, I can't see any reason why your home could not be outfitted. I hate to throw stones but it seems like you just don't want to have to fork out ANY money to upgrade a system that will defend you and your families home and life potentially. It amazes me that people will spend $1000.00 for a new bed to sleep on, and 40,000 for a new vehicle, but not $1500.00 at the top end to protect themselves ffrom a fire or other dangers.
The cell phone backup is a good option, and yes, ADT is way too expensive. Protection One does offer a much better deal including a wireless system and with cell backup and smoke detectors that are pet sensitive for no additional costs.
Brinks is NOT a good company as they are the only major player out there to put a proprietary system in your home using much cheaper and less reliable equipment. That means if you don't like their rates, or their service, you will have to pay ADT or a company like Protection One to install brand new control panels and new keypads, which will cost you at least $200.00. Brinks systems are the only ones that will totally lock you out with a lock out code. I would not recommend them in a million years. Hope this helps.

ADT CELLULAR BACKUP DOESNT WORK

I purchased the cellular backup...my phone line was cut and it didnt work. The tech who installed it, installed it wrong. My business was wiped out and I had to close the doors. I have this same useless backup in my other locations and ADT was unwilling to come out and check to see if those were installed improperly even after several attempts they will only come out if I pay them a 130 dollar fee plus 25 dollars an hour. Some kind of protection!!! Im am already out of thousands of dollars and now they want more money. Im going to cancel this service and go with Brinks who says theya re willing to buy me out of that bogus contract with a company that is unwilling to support their faulty hardware!!!!

Phone line Tamper
#10Consumer Suggestion

To all who have questions about phone line security-I work for Protection One. It is possible for ALL systems to be damaged outside of your home. The phone line is very vulnerable and the only way to guarantee transmission of an alarm signal is to purchase a cellular back up. This little peice of equipment will send a cellular signal from your panel to the closest cell tower and then to our UL listed monitoring station! No company no matter what the promise(huh, someone who is turning a profit from a sale lie?) can guarantee any better response w/ a regular land line. Don't get me wrong, I hate ADT as much as the other people on this site, any company that tells their emps "we no longer do what the cust wants, we do what the government says b/c we have to" Is not a comp. I'd want to be w/. And yes, that came directly from one of their sales people. I would never lie to defame another company! So, cell back-up is the way to go, But watch out, ADT wants your arm and leg for it Pro-1 $149 to install and $3 to monitor! Call us 1-800-Get-Help

If you contract with ADT make sure you have been protected

Having been in the alarm business my son asked me to look over his installation. I found that it was possible to disable the alarm and enter the house in less than 30 seconds. If you contract with ADT make sure that they install a tamper switch in your phone box outside your home.Otherwise the system is worthless.
