I called the company because my garage door had come off the track. The door was stuck in the down position and my car was inside the garage. I was told that the cost to come out was $48.00. The $48.00 would then be applied to any work performed. I was expecting to pay about $60.00 for the work. I reached this estimate because the same thing had happened to my neighbor and this is what she had paid.

I had contacted another company previously who charged $65.00 per hour. I would have used them but they could not come until later in the day and I needed my car. The company's name was Jarvis Garage Door company 209-836-1111.

When the young man arrived, he looked at the door and said it would cost $165.00. When I asked why so much he explained that he had to take the door down and fix the springs and cables. Since the work seemed extensive I believed that the extra cost was justified and told him to proceed.

Ten to fifteen minutes later I went out to the garage and found the door in the up position. The young man was in the car. I walked up to the car and asked him if he was done. He said yes. I asked why it cost so much if it only took 15 minutes. He said it didn't matter how long it took, this was the price.

I took the bill and went into the house to contact the company but only got the answering machine. I left a message. I paid the bill with a check because I didn't know what else to do.

I called the company again and reach a man. I don't know his name. I told him that this was a rip-off. I told him that he did not take down the door as stated and had charged me $165.00 for 15 minutes of work.

His response was that I had misunderstood and that he only meant that he was bringing the door down. Note; the door was stuck in the down position, there was no need to bring it down. He also said that this was standard practice and that I was unreasonable.

He dismissed my comments that the other company charged $65.00 per hour as false. He basically charged me $660.00 per hour. He suggested that this was why I was mad because I could not make that amount of money per hour. He was abusive and offensive.

I know that the amount is not very much but these people should not take advantage of consumers in this way.
