In May 2005, my husband had an AFLAC agent come to our home and speak with us about Hospital Indemnity Insurance. After listening to her speak about the product we decided that this product was something we would be interested in.

We gave this agent our bank account information and asked her to wait until Friday to process the application because we needed to wait until my husband got paid. Unfortunately, my husband and I had a financial emergency arise and could not afford to have the policy taken out that week. I contacted our representative and asked her to hold on to our policy until May 31st (which was a Tuesday).

On Friday, May 27th, I contacted our agent again and informed her that my husband and I were not going to be able to afford the AFLAC policies at this time and to PLEASE NOT send in the policy information. I had to leave a message on her cell phone because I was unable to get in touch with her personally.

On Tuesday, May 31st, I received a message on my home phone from our agent. This is what the message said: "Ashley, I am a little confused as to why you aren't able to get the AFLAC policies that we talked about. You kept asking me to hold on to the policies and you would contact me when you were ready to process these policies. It bothers me that I took time out of my schedule and hired a babysitter so that I could come talk to you and your husband about AFLAC. I didn't get your message until this afternoon and I sent your policy in to the office this morning at 5:00 am."

I contacted her immediately and told her that I wanted both of the policies that I had signed up for cancelled IMMEDIATELY. She assured me that that she would send in the cancellation that day (Wednesday, June 1). I contacted AFLAC's main customer service department (Friday, June 3) and they informed me that they had never received a cancellation notice, so I faxed a request for cancellation in to AFLAC myself.

In the meantime, the money for my policies came out and completely screwed up my bank account. I was assured by my agent that once my cancellation was received at AFLAC that I would be issued a FULL REFUND! To this date (June 15th) I am still waiting for them to process my cancellation and send my refund!

I will NEVER recommend AFLAC insurance to anyone. My sister currently has an AFLAC policy and she is having problems as well... and can not seem to get in contact with her representative!

Your problem is your agent, not the company

#2Consumer Suggestion

It sounds as if you gave your agent clear instructions to not send in the policy until you gave the go ahead.

And you were ignored. I can very much appreciate your frustration with this situation. However, as an Aflac agent, I can guarantee you the problems you are experiencing are the fault of your agent.

You gave a simple instruction to your agent that was confirmed by her in the message you recieved on your answering machine: "You kept asking me to hold on to the policies and you would contact me when you were ready to process these policies."

Unless you contacted her and told her to process them, she is in the wrong.

Please understand that insurance agents are not employees of their insurance companies, rather INDEPENDENT representatives of them.

Your best bet is to file a complaint against HER (not the company) to your state's insurance commissioner. If she recieves multiple complaints, or any serious ones, she can have her insurance license revoked, and wont be able to do things like this to you or other people in the future.

I am terribly sorry for what happened to you, but please keep the blame where it belongs - on the agent, not the company.

If I were licensed in NC, I would get in touch with you and show you how it should be done.
