I was contacted via letter from this collection company to notify me that I owed $87 on a Verizon bill from my college apartment. I graduated and moved from that town and did not even reside there during the billing period in question. This is the first time I have ever heard of this debt and I'm appaled that this company is threatening to collect on it or turn my name in to the credit agencies.

When I called to discuss what I thought was obviously a mistake, they were extremely rude, notifying me that "debt doesn't just go away". They stated that I would need to provide them with proof that I didn't reside in that town . . . I offered a copy of my college degree, showing that I graduated in Decemeber (the bill is from Dec. - June) and they stated that they would need something, such as an envelope, to prove that I was in a different residence. When I notified the representative that I wasn't in the habit of keeping records, let alone envelopes for eleven years she simply said I should pay the bill.

Unbelievable - I wrote them a letter and have NO intention of being scammed by this agency.

Check with your states statute of limitations (SOL). After 10 years I am almost certain they cannot collect on it due to SOL. If this is true then you can use this as an affirmative defense in getting them to leave you alone. Go to BudHibbs.com for more infomation on how to deal with JDB (Junk Debt Buyers).
