How long was the car sitting on his lot waiting for you to pay for the repairs, before he had to get the lien against it? More than a week. Probably more like a month or more.
Here's a thought...don't waste the mechanic's time by having them fix the car, if you cannot pay for it. This is the ONLY reason mechanics get titles to people's cars.
