Complaint Review: Alltel

Alltel Charges You For New Phone But If It's Defective, They Replace With Refurbished Phone After 30 Days. Defective phone, poor customer service, misleading warranty policy Little Rock Arkansas

Went to a corporate Alltel Store in Tifton, GA. Bought 400.00 worth of phones. (one blackberry, two motorola hint's). One of the Hints died after 4 days. Had to drive to Tifton, then to Valdosta to get a new replacement. 25 days later, the replacement Hint also died. Called Alltel, and was told, that a refurbished phone would be provided as a replacement.

Now, I signed a two year contract for this phone, paid full retail price, and 29 days in, I don't have a new phone, I have a used, refurbished phone. Alltel refuses to discuss the issue. My past experience with alltel and their refurb phones is that they last for 30 to 45 days and fail. My contract is for 24 months, and now I'm stuck with a used phone that I paid full, new price for. And Alltel doesn't see any problem with this.

This is a phone that retails (without a contract) for 300.00, and the warranty is 30 days? My coffee maker has a better warranty than Alltel provides!

Alltel does not have a single phone "custom manufactured" for them. The phones roll of the assembly line and are identical to a phone sent to any other CDMA carrier. The difference is in the firmware - that's it.

Further, the "warranty" does not say if the phone is less than 30 days old it will be replaced with a new phone. It merely states that if the phone has a verifiable manufacturer defect within the warranty period (12 months) it will be replaced. Ideally it will be the exact same model of phone, if not then one of the same form, function and near price. That's it. The replacement WILL be a refurbished phone that was refurbished NOT by Alltel but by the phone manufacturer.

So you see, your stance and information is wrong. Next time I would suggest not arguing with somebody inside the industry - your misinformaton will be proven WRONG

Maybe check your warranty?

A lot of warranties do not say they have to replace it with a new phone. They have the option of fixing it or giving an equivalent replacement.

Alltel Sells It, Alltel Should Stand Behind It. End of Story.

Alltel sells them, Alltel programs them, they have ALLTEL written all over the boxes and the phones themselves, they are custom manufactured for Alltel to work on their network exclusively, and are sold by Alltel exclusively to only Alltel customers, but when they fail, Alltel is the first one to say "not our problem, the manufacturer handles the warranty. We only have them manufactured and sold exclusively in our stores by our personnel."

Newsflash to the uninformed, Alltel contracts Motorola to make the phone. Any reputable company would stand behind the product and not play a game of pass the buck.

See, the first phone failed in 4 days. The second phone failed in 25 days. But Alltel was insistent that the phone was more than thirty days old. It wasn't. Their warranty clearly states that a phone less than thirty days from purchase will be replaced with a new phone.

So, uh, the gripe is correctly placed. Warranty says less than 30 days from purchase, phone was 29 days old. Alltel decided to replace with a refurb, not the manufacturer. Nobody even called the manufacturer. I went in to the same alltel store and they gave me a refurb. No phone calls, no contacting the manufacturer.

So how exactly does that work? Alltel doesn't warranty the phone but they administer and make judgement calls for the manufacturer? Why? Because they are such caring, nice people?

Alltel does not provide the warranty

I got news for you: Alltel does not provide the warranty, the phone manufacturer does. And regardless of how you feel, Alltel is not replacing a new phone with a used phone. They are replacing your USED phone with a certified USED phone. Guess who certified it: the manufacturer of the handset.

So if you have any gripe it is with them, not Alltel.

Thousands of these units are sent out every month; very few have any defects. Sorry if yours has them; keep after it until you get a decent replacement
