Alternate Postal Direct is yet another company taking advantage of the contractor loophole to pay abysmally low rates to honest workers. If you're looking for a side job for some extra spending money, pass on APD. Details of the job we did: 2 people, using 1 vehicle, delivering 422 phone books total to a specified route in a small suburban town (Bedford, MA) in February 2016. Fuel and supplies cost us $22. We worked approximately 20 hours to get the job done, including time spent "bagging" the books. We were paid $80.18 for the whole job ($.19 per book, not the stated rate of $.20, which is already insultingly low). After expenses, our split was $29.09 each, or about $1.45 per hour. Wandering around picking up change off the sidewalk pays better than APD does.
