I bought a plane ticket and later cancelled it. American Airlines charged me $200 for cancellation fee, and kept the rest of the money that I could use for a later flight.

Isn't it outrageous?

Buy cheap, take your chances

The rebuttal above is absolutely correct. Furthermore, any residual vale left over must be used within 365 or it is lost completely as well. Also, the new ticket will be reissued in your name only - it cannot be used by anyone else.

Sorry, those are the rules, and if you actually received a paper ticket, they were part of the pile of documentation that accompanied it.

You buy cheap and you take your chances. I fly so often that even losing the value of an entire ticket is cheaper than paying for the higher fare tickets every week. But yes, I have lost $$ on a couple of those.

Next time, you need to buy the class of ticket that will fit your needs, not just the cheapest one.

Discounted tickets come with warnings

#3Consumer Suggestion

It sounds like you took advantage of a discounted fare ticket which comes with a bunch of warnings. In my experience the consumer is hammered with all the warnings so I don't know how someone could have missed them.

If you want to avoid the possibility of cancellation fees you'll need to buy a full fare ticket. The drawback of the full fare ticket is that it can cost 2-10 times what the discounted ticket costs. Among the benefits are: no cancellation fees, no change fees, and they are fully refundable.
