I have used my Amex card for rental cars since 1984 under the notion that should I have an accident, I'm covered by Amex. I have even accused Rental car companies of "False Advertising" trying to sell insurance policies at the time of possession when renting a car. I had 2 window chips in a Jeep Commander I rented from Dallas to Mobile. I detailed all the data in a claim and filed after I had paid Thrifty off ($191 claim)(no worries--right!?) Amex tells me that because I had an "SUV" it was not covered in the plan. I explained my disbelief as I have always been told-"use the amex card to rent a car as it covers insurance and don't buy the rental companies policy as it is not needed" Media types on travel shows have always said this in their "Savy Traveller" type programs.

Well, I plan to change my amex usage by cancelling my "Rewards" program and possibly charging the majority of my transactions to Visa. I estimate that 1 year of charge reductions by me will cost Amex $3000 in income. Fine print is for Lawyers--not business partners!!
