I enrolled in the online Drivers Ed course (traffic school) in lieu of paying a speeding ticket. Throughout the course, validating questions pop up to ensure that the person taking the course is the one registered for the course. You must answer the questions with 70% accuracy. The questions are multiple choice and include things such as your address, zip code, type of car you drive, etc.

When I took the course, the validating questions were not accurate to my data....my data has been registred with our state DMV for years and there is NO REASON that they should not be able to access it!

So, every time I was asked one of their validation questions, I had to guess at the answer they were looking for. When they asked me to choose my zip code or the type of car I drive, or my address, none of my data was listed as an option. Someone's data was there, but it wasn't mine!

After answering several questions wrong and after being threatened to be locked out of the course, I called and emailed the help desk for a resolution and this was the response I recieved back...

"Unfortunately we have no way of changing the security question answers."

This curt and extremely unhelpful reply came back with no name, no follow up suggestions, nothing! Basically, their mistake, but not their problem!

Keep in mind that the error was on their end and they did absolutely nothing to try to help me fix the problem. When you're dealing with a 6 hour, timed course that has to be completed by a court-ordered deadline a roadblock is THE LAST THING THAT YOU NEED!!

I've reported Amerian Safety Council to the Better Business Bureau and am awaiting a reply. I have included the complaint here. In a few minutes, I'm going to Twitter my disappointment. After that, I'm going to put it on Facebook and MySpace and every other social media site that I can find.

Perhaps THEN American Safety Council will care enough to figure out how to fix the problem that they have created.

I apologize you had such a difficult time with the course. Please know we have addressed the security question issue by replacing the technology so students will no longer have to rely on information we cannot control. Regardless, you should not have received a response in that manner.

Also, please know the person responding as "Robert M." is not an employee, nor was paid to post rebuttals to reviews about us. The best we can tell is he was an over-zealous customer that while he may have had good intentions, went about it poorly and thereby made the company look as if we were posing as consumers to defend ourselves.

If you get a chance, send your complaint or experience to our review page where a quality assurance officer will review it and get back to you: http://www.americansafetycouncil.com/reviews.html

Unfortunately I believe they have company insiders posting rebuttals to complaints. I don't understand why somebody who was happy with the course would go on www.ripoffreport.com and defend a company they have no affiliation with. I suggest everyone to go to a DMV approved 5 hour defensive driving course and avoid using this website. Their online course takes an average of 10 hours as stated by the call representative. Also the website has a habit of locking you out of the course and still charging you the money. So no certificate and your out the 25-50$ you spent. Avoid at all costs. It is now my job to make sure no one else gets screwed over out of their time and money by using this shady course.

Please give correct information when complaining about something!

First of all, the security questions are entered into the system by the Texas DMV NOT the company. Second of all, did you ever stop and think that there is more than one person with your name? This happened to me as well and they were kind enough to explain that with the Texas DMV, a lot of their information is either not up to date or could belong to someone else who shares the same first and last name. I had no problem with that as they unlocked my course several times without question.

Also, the company doesn't work directly with the DMV. They are merely allowed to provide the course since they are approved and accredited by the state. So when they said they couldn't change the answers they were correct.

Reporting it to the BBB won't help you. Smart people read things before signing up. If you would have read through the student agreement contract like I did, you would've noticed that it's pointless to report to the BBB. It's like signing a contract when you're buying a home. I'm sure you're not going to just sign every page without reading the fine print right?
