I had Amex Movers move my 2 bedroom condo into my newly purchased house just yesterday. I was quoted 6 hours for 2 men at a rate of $69/hr around $414. It took them 10+ hours at $1157 and the movers took the longer way to my moving location after we told them which way to go. They had me fill out and sign the paperwork first (my fault) so it'd look all neat and tidy at the end to support their activities. They claimed more packing material than what was actually used. I had to call the cops TWICE on these movers!

The movers broke my dining room table and when I spoke to the so-called manager-David- he tried to pay me under the table to avoid going through the company's insurance. He offered me $50 for a $600 table only 2 months old! When I questioned the amount I was being charged; he told his movers to lock up the truck and drive off- with my 62" TV and other furniture!

When I asked to see my contract and get a copy of it, the mover actually put it in his binder and sat on it in my living room and refused to let me see it! That's the 1st time I called the police. They advised me to pay the amount and take it to court later. When I filled out the paperwork authorizing payment, the paper wanted me to sign saying I received my property in the same condition as before I moved.

I wrote on the paper that my table was broken during the move. The mover contacted his boss who told me he wouldn't accept payment with that written on there! He wanted me to sign saying I did receive my stuff in the same condition and he would email me a complaint form tomorrow (today-I have not received it yet). He also advised the mover to take my authorization with my credit card info and start filling out a new sheet with my information! He only stopped when I told him it'd be fraud for him to forge my signature.

This is the 2nd time I called the police because the movers tried to drive off with my TV again when I gave them my payment! The same cops came. They asked the manager why I couldn't write that as it was true. The manager said he'd only take the payment saying I did receive my stuff in the same condition. I did fill out a new form and the manager also said he wanted my authorization sheet (with the broken table info) so I wouldn't have it. (They didn't realize I made a copy on my copy machine).

I wrote out a new sheet agreeing to all their terms. The mover also wanted me to put down my driver's license information and he asked me for my security number on my credit card to which the police told me not to give it to him; they also told him he wasn't getting it. I now plan to take them to court to dispute the amount I was forced to pay in order to get my belongings. They charged me for packing materials I declined, they charged me 8.5% for taxes (instead of California's 7.75%) and overtime charges when they took their time plus overtime wasn't specified on the contract.

I also have 4 police witnesses who seen my credit card authorization form with my disputed claims. They advised me to take these guys to court and said these guys are suspicious and I should check their licensing for validity. They also said they'd be hesitant giving them my credit card information. I couldn't agree more. Problem was, it was 11 o'clock at night and I had no way to take out $900 in cash.

After all this drama, the movers did not finish unpacking or moving my stuff until midnight! And we started at 11 am. I refused to pay for more than 10 hours of work because of the times stopped for the police.

Still got that photocopy? Good for you for standing up to them and not letting a bad situation become worse. If they had that signed document AND still had your TV in their truck, it would have been like you had given it to them, since on paper it was sitting in your new house.

Good luck in court! I'm rooting for you.
