Complaint Review: Amodio Mayflower Moving Company

Amodio-Mayflower Moving Company Dishonest. Lied about fee and grossly underestimated the amount of stuff we had in our house and over charged us by $700 RIPOFF New Britain Connecticut

We contaced Amodio movers as we thought they were the best in the business. They were polite and friendly on the phone and came right out to give us an estimate. Joe Grasson, their sales rep,said it would be $1151.60 and 9 hours of work to move and unload 5 full rooms or 8,000 pounds and quoted us for 3 movers.

The day they arrived, they had 5 men, one with a San Diego moving and storage T-shirt on who my husband is not convinced worked for them. He thinks the movers were shadey and asked one of their friends to help them and planned on paying them on the side, after they jacked up our price. It took them 2 trips, when the original estimate called for one trip with one truck. Why did they not bring a truck big enough? Joe Grasso said that the one truck should have been enough. Did he under estimate or did the movers pack lightly to look like it would take 2 trips?

All day, all I heard was, "Mam, you got anything to drink?" I gave them all I had, being nice. Never was it appreciated and at the end of the day, they dumped out all of their drinks in my driveway and left their cups and straws by the street, not even contained.

They broke our central air thermostat, knocking it clear off the wall when bringing a mattress up the stairs. They wanted to go to Home Depot to fix it themselves, but we knew that it had to be recalibrated and needed to be reported and fixed correctly. They did not even tell my husband, he happened to be walking up after them and found it on the floor.

They had me presign all the papers and initial all the boxes (I know that was so ignorant of me to do, but I trusted them.) They arrived at 8:20am and wrote in after in the preinitaled box that they arrived at 7am!!!

At the end, they tried to charge us $1741.00, for 5 movers, when we were quoted 3, for two trips when we were quoted for one and for 13,000 pounds of stuff when we were quoted for 8,000.

It was 5pm by this time and my husband and the driver were on the phones to Amodio. We had to go be at the closing for 5pm. We wrote the check out for the remainder of the orignally quoted balance (we deposited $300) and gave it to our relator to handle and we left.
They told their boss that we said, "Talk to the hand." and that we "sicked our realtor on them." That was totally not the case! My husband tried telling the movers that it had nothing to do with them, but we were being grossly over charged and something was not right. Their response, "OH HELL NO." That was very inappropriate.

The once cordial and prompt Amodio is now not returning any of our calls, and has not sent out a claim form, despite our repeated messages and requests to get one. We are very upset and dissatisfied with them. We don't know what to do and are growing tired of waiting. We keep calling them and get the run around each time. As is stands now, 12 days after moving, nothing has been resolved.

2) I never said I was- I was repeating what I was told by movers.
3 & 4) I'm just telling people my side of it. Search this website for Amodio, you won't find any other complaints; thats because we offer a quality service to people who want it. I don't know what you were looking for when you hired us, but its clearly not a service we provide. We have an excellent reputation and those we have worked with know that.

What really happened

I remember this claim well, and I'll be quite honest and admit that we have not sent out a claims report or treated this matter seriously in the least, but here's why.

The estimate I gave was accurate, and while sometimes its true i'm off (hey, its only an estimate) I generally try and high-ball it so that worst case scenario they get money back. In my years in this business I know that charging people more after the fact generally leaves a bad taste in their mouth, even if it is justified, so I try and prevent it when I can.

But in this situation there were extenuating circumstances. As stated I did quote for 3 movers, however a week prior to the scheduled moving day I received a phone call requesting a change to "five of my biggest guys" from this customer. At the time it seemed like an odd request, and the person on the other end of the phone sounded a bit out of if (drunk?) but I decided to let my suspicions go and make the change for them, it was a definate possibility that the customer had decided they wanted more to be moved than they had originally showed me, or that they wanted it done faster.

When moving day came the five men showed up, prepared to do the job described but were not shown any cooperation by the customer, the lady of the house. They seemed surprised there were 5 of them. They offered to contact the main office, and myself, to find out if there had been a miscommunication somewhere along the line that needed to be fixed before they continued. The woman said no, that she "thinks she might remember calling about some more guys" and wandered off into the house. The movers had to pursue her in order to get her to show them what needed to be moved on the truck.

She vaguely pointed towards the rooms in question, and wandered off again, leaving the men to guess at what needed to go where. After less than an hour of packing possessions onto the truck the lady of the house appeared again, scotch glass in hand, and proceeded to block the movers in every way should could, suggesting they "move" her, derogatorily. They tried their best to be polite and work around her, but the situation only got worse. Her mannerisms became more lewd, she began appearing in less and less clothing and becoming more and more aggressive in her sexual advances.

The men finally gave up at trying to deal with her, and decided to take the truck on the road with what little they had packed, hoping that by the time they got back to refill the woman would passed out, or her husband would be home to calm her.

They had no such luck. When they returned the lady of the house was completely nude, pleasuring herself on the living room couch (which was an item they were scheduled to move) with an unidentified object. They did their best to ignore her and continue moving, but after failing to capture their attention on the couch she resumed her games at trying to force them to notice her.

All in all I think the men did very well considering what they had to put up with. The only thing I think we could have done better in this situation would be not to have agreed to provide our service to begin with. Let someone else put up with your drunken advances next time, Amodio/Mayflower Moving COmpany wants nothing to do with you.
