While reviewing my bank statement, I discovered a charge for 59.95 for AMR Ld Service Plan, which I did not recognize.

My bank could not help because the phone number they had was missing the last digit. I then reviewed my bank statements for the last two years. To my horror, I found that these deductions had taken place since July of 2001. The first two were under the name "Long Distance Subscr". The next two were from "Direct One" and "Telephone Savings Plan". All others were from AMR. I have no idea how they got my credit card number, have never received a statement from them, and have never used the service.

Thanks to a web search, I discovered ripoffreport.com, which showed about 100 similar complaints and gave me a valid phone number.

The people who answered my phone calls were very courteous and the company has agreed to refund my payments for the last seven months. This means that I have only lost $780 instead of the $1200 which I paid them. I'll update this if I really get the money.

Up to now, I have naively thought that it couldn't happen to me. The lesson from this is CHECK YOUR BANK STATEMENTS CAREFULLY.
