Hired Andys Bathroom & Kitchen remodeling to revamp our master bathroom in July 2009;

Work commenced in Oct 2009.  Criminal case settled Oct 2010!

A few things we learned along the way.

#1. Not licensed by MHIC, No Insurance, Not Bonded (as of this posting)

#2. Extensive criminal history.  See for yourself!!

      casesearch.courts.state.md.us/inquiry/inquiry-index.jsp

      Last Name -  Orlowski,  First name of A.  You will be shocked!  I was!

#3. Substandard work, I had to have the bathroom ripped out and redone. His work

       violated numerous plumbing and electrical codes and the shower leaked like a sieve.

#4.  His working habits are nasty, leaving your home and yard filthy.

#5.  He is a thief.  Contracts are for labor and materials but unused consumables and

        refunds from returns disappear, along with item from your fridge.

#6. Does not pay helper, on more than one occasion his helper asked us to pay Andy

      so he could get paid,  problem was we were to the penny up to date.

#7.  Argumentative with homeowners; when discrepancies are brought to his attention he

       immediately becomes confrontational and can be very intimidating.

What a mistake!  Kudos to my spouse for keeping his cool!!

After Mr. Orlowskis departure from our home, I began exploring ways to recoup at least some of our money.  At this point I contacted the Maryland Home Improvement Commission.  They pointed out to us that the license was a commercial not residential and that the insurance was also commercial.  This means that Mr Orlowski was in violation of Maryland law.  They carried the ball from there; I provided detailed documentation, photos and costs to correct the problems.

It took months but in June 2010 Mr. Orlowski was charged with two criminal counts and plead guilty in August 2010.  As part of the plea and probation agreement, Mr Orlowski is required to reimburse us for all of our expenses.   So folks you CAN win against the crooks!

Lesson learned?  Make sure the documents you are given are valid for the work to be performed.  Make sure of what the contractor can/cant do per that license.  Keep a daily log, take photos, look over every receipt, item by item and if you end up like us with a disaster on your hands look at your state and local government for possible support and resolution.
