A little over 3 years ago I purchased a whole-house walter filtration system from Aquasana for almost $1,000.  The system has a replaceable dual tank canister that acts as the second and third stages in the filtration process.  Their website (aquasana.com) states that the unit should last as long as 5 years, but it is only warranted for 3.  My use of the system has been minimal as I do not have any children and there has never been more than two people living in the house since I purchased the system.  A short time out of warranty, the canisters began leaking at the connections (both top and bottom) where there is a white, plastic ring.  When I called the company, the sales person advised that I could either call a plumber (a lost cause as I had already tried to seal the leak, but the tanks are made of a shiny, slick material so that nothing will stick to them and all types of sealants failed) or buy a replacement dual canister set for $600.  I explained that the unit had seen minimal use and reminded the salesperson that their website claims that their filtration system is less expensive than bottled water (not true in my experience).  I estimated that bottled water would cost me no more than $150 per year, whereas this system was costing me over $300 per year and now they wanted another $600 for something that apparently would fail again as soon as it was out of warranty.  The response was "I'm sorry that the system did not work for you, goodbye."  Their system is called the "Rhino EQ-300."  Not sure how they came up with the name but when the product fails and you find out you are going to get gouged to replace it, maybe that is the Rhino's horn getting you.
