Asset Acceptance, Debt Collectors ripoff Warren Michigan
About 4 years ago we were in financial trouble and instead of filing bankruptcy we opted to go with a debt management company that was to negotiate lower payments or settlements with our debtors. We paid them a preset amount monthly to apply toward our debt. After paying for about 1 1/2 yrs. I learned through an attorney for the BBB that the co. had been closed and that there was no money for their clients and no debts had been paid. I was able to settle 3 of these outstanding debts with the origional creditors but others are still haunting us. I recently received corespondence from a "law firm" representing Asset Acceptance Corp. demanding over $9000 on a debt I don't even know whether or not is mine. I sent this law firm a letter over a month ago requesting proof of validity for this debt, name of origional creditor, etc. and have not yet received a response. I had never, prior to these letters, even heard of this collection agency and feel they sre trying to get money from me that I don't owe. Why else would they not provide me with the requested information? I think this is an illegal collection activity.
