Asset Acceptance Trying to collect on 12 year old debt ripoff Warren Michigan
I had a VicTanny/Ballys account in 1992/93 and unfortunatly could not pay for my membership. I was young and irresponsible. Well in 2001 I got a job in the mortgage business and learned how to clean up my credit and I did so. I have access to pulling my credit anytime. I did so, Vic Tanny/Ballys was such an old account it was removed from my credit due to the law of 7 years of a bad debt being on your credit.
Well here we are in the year 2005 and I get a letter in the mail from this company stating I owe them $400 plus on this account? I know I am no longer responsible for this debt.
I did my research on this company before I called and found out they DO buy old debts that are dismissed by law and try to collect on them if apparently you don't know your legal rights.
I called up my rep. "Emily" and informed her this debt is not vaild, to make a long story short this girl had the nerves to tell me despite this debt being now 11/12 years old I was still responsible for it and I would be repsonsible for it until I die! HaHa I told her I know my rights and that's not how the law goes. I informed her that I was NEVER gonna pay them and she could quote me on that and besides I wanted her to send me a copy of this "so called debt" from the REAL company who claims I owe them.
After speaking with this rep. I contacted my state attorney general and the better business bureau and filed complaints against this company.
I got a letter in the mail probably about two weeks later from the attorney general on behalf of "Asset Financial" stating that they would stop action on collecting this "so-called debt".
I am satisfied only to a degree with this. I feel they are people out there who are victims of these types of companies and it needs to stop. I getting more justice by posting this comment on here to try to help as many more people that I can.

I too am a victim of Asset Acceptance
#2Consumer Suggestion

I too am a victim of Asset Acceptance. They have harassed my father trying to collect a debt that isn't even on my credit report either.
Don't call the BBB in Detroit about them; they know who they are and although Asset is a member of the BBB, they truly have a problem, with over 200 complaints this year alone against them.
Fight for your rights; call a consumer law official, and Asset will get the message.
