I've always paid for the insurance on all my cell phones through the past 15 years. I have used it one time. My phone fell out of my hand and into a sewer and I watched it as it floated away.

I called asurion and explained what happened and they told me that my phone (moto Droid) was no longer being made so they didn't have one to send me. So they offered me one of two phones, the desire, or the devour. both phones aren't even close to the moto droid, the devour is dubbed "the droid's little brother."

I told them that I wouldn't pay for insurance for a BMW 7 series if i knew that if i got in an accident, i would only be covered for a 3 series. They said they couldn't offer me any other phones. So I realize they have no problem taking my money and not staying true to their part. I asked if I could get some money back if I took one of the lower models, and of course they responded "no."

I can understand not being able to offer an upgrade if they had my phone available, but how is it my fault they don't carry my phone anymore? So of course they'll round down, but why do they think people would be OK with this? Basically, after hours of complaining, they finally offered me the incredible, which is a much better offer.

Now, after reading some of these reports, I'm worried that they'll send out a used incredible.

Excellent description of how another big business continues to rip off the consumer!  I too, have Asurion insurance through Verizon Wireless.  Although, I have probably the simplest phone out there, it makes absolutely no sense to me either why this insurance company continues to dodge its responsibilities to the customer!

Of course, Verizon is just sitting on its financially-fat duff, claiming they have nothing to do with it...they just do the billing which Asurion is only too quick to take the $5.00 per month they charge you.  But, when it comes time to "pay the piper"...Asurion tries to find every damned excuse in the book for NOT doing the right thing in the first place!

This unfortunate scenario is becoming more and more commonplace in American society.  What is frankly needed...is for people to begin complaining loud and incessantly...to the companies screwing them, to their congressional representatives in both houses of Congress, their local state legislators, regulatory agencies, such as, the Federal Trade Commission, U.S. Department of Justice, etc.  File complaints with the BBB.

Pick up a pen and paper or get on your computer and prepare a letter to send via Certified Mail...and keep on bombarding everyone even remotely connected to whichever business entity you have problems with!  Note I said send a letter via Certified Mail.  From experience, I know only too well how businesses will claim they never received your correspondence!

Perhaps there may be someone out there who regularly reads the ROR site and has the means and organizational skills to establish a website where consumers who've been shafted by businesses can go, complete a formal letter of complaint to whichever agencies, politicians, etc are appropriate, and the website owner can transmit them.

Nothing with these big businesses is going to change until the consumers start complaining EN MASSE, and without let-up...until corrective action is taken!  Too bad there aren't many attorneys out there with the guts to prep a class-action case against companies like Asurion!  No doubt because they probably aren't going to make multi-millions in profit from any settlement.  Justice for the consumer is all but gone these days!
