Atlantic Circulation, Inc. Traveling Sales Crew Scam York, Pennsylvania
On October 6, 2011, I was leaving for class when a pair of guys rang the doorbell. They came off as college students and said that they were asking people to donate magazine subscriptions to places like hospitals and senior centers. They said they were in a competition with other people who wanted to be rewarded for taking initiative and working for a prize trip by raising points while collecting the donations.
To be honest, I knew I should say no but I knew from personal experience that it takes guts to go door-to-door. I had to get strangers to invest in me and my causes before so even if these guys were pretty fake, I felt compelled to give them a hand. The minute they walked away, I regretted folding. I don't think what I did was wrong but let's just say I blew most of one month's earnings (I'll leave the amount to your imagination) and I never heard back from them again.
I considered the money donated (they kept the change, too) and therefore not something to let myself regret losing but I really could have used the money. Now that I've done some reading around the internet and know (instead of assume) that it's basically a scam, I think it's a shame.
