I have been renting a car from 28 to 31 October 2017 near Rome (Ciampino airport). I have paid in advance the renting and the insurance. At car picking they blocked a 150 eur deposit on my Mastercard (and this was clearly written in the contract). Then Oct 31 I have returned the car without any damage and with full tank.

They said they have then unlocked the deposit, but after more than one week, this is still blocked. I have open a claim with them, but they are saying they have unlocked the amount and it is my bank (sic!) keeping it blocked. My bank send me a clear report that shows it is AUTO CLICK SA POL BARRIO AE ESP keeping the amount blocked.

Something similar happened to me in springtime with another renting company (Arguscarhire) which kept the deposit blocked for about 4 weeks. Usually - after a rent - I have seen the deposit unlocked immediately after the car return (in minutes or first working day if holyday). I suspect they use this trick for financial reasons
