My sister went with my mother and stepfather to look at a new Hyundai at Automax Hyundai. They took her keys for her car to supposedly evaluate it for a trade. They tried to sell her a car that was in inventory that she didn't want. They kept pressuring her on the car, so finally my mother said "we are going", and the Automax people said "it is not your decision".

Well, my sister didn't want the car, and my mother knew that they would pressure her into it, so she asked for my sisters keys. They said that they couldn't get them right now because someone was already interested in her old car. My mother told them it wasn't there's to sell and to get the keys back right now. Finally they gave the keys back. As my mother and my sister were leaving the lot, the dealer wrote down their license plate numbers.

They then went to several more Hyundai dealers, but were turned down for credit. Finally one Hyundai dealer agreed to give her credit, but at a 14% interest rate. The finance person said "What's the deal with Automax Hyundai" because apparently there were multiple denials from Automax Hyundai on that day which caused her negative score. She had not actually even filled out an application for credit, but they had enough information on her to file fraudulent credit activity.

She ended up buying from the other dealer, which was dumb because she should have gotten her credit corrected first. I also advised her to consult legal advice, but she didn't because she doesn't like to do that sort of thing, and was also afraid of reprisals. I guess someone who would fraudulently put activity on your credit report could be capable of much more, so perhaps just letting it go was a wise move on her part.
