Get your weight tickets!

#2Consumer Suggestion

Sat, October 09, 2004

Make sure you get original copies of both of the weight tickets. You do have the right to request a reweigh in your presence, but you need to call and ask them to fax you the reweigh request form. Be next to your fax machine (or at a Kinko's or something) while you call on a separate line, so you can keep them on the line while the fax goes through. Don't let them say "OK, we'll send it to you", because you'll never see it. If you do this, you'll also need to find the closest weigh station (call your local police station, they'll know where the closest one to you is) and you might be charged $10 or so for the use of the scales. Small price to pay for actually knowing what your load costs.

If you are going to do this reweigh, you will need to pay them in advance, then follow them to the station after your load is unloaded. That's when you get the "empty" weight. Subract this from the first weight, and you have the size of your load, and know how much you SHOULD be billed.

You should go to this link and find out the requirements for a certified weight ticket. If any of these listed conditions are not met, your weight tickets are not valid, and you don't really know how much your load weighs (and thus what your actual bill is). Don't let them give you photocopies, or somehow claim that they do not have to give you real carbon copies, because that is FALSE.

Be prepared for the possibility that this delivery could be up to 30 days from your pickup. That is not unheard of with this company, and is actually more the norm. They will charge you for "a flight equals 7 steps", plus long carries. Measure it yourself, if you are unsure of the distance.

There is no dispatcher in VA. All of their operations are based in San Jose. Your delivery might be done by a copany named Progressive Van Lines. be sure to note in your omplaint to the DOT (1-888-DOT-SAFT) if this happens. Although they are actually the same company with the same office run by the same people, they are technically two different company, neither of which has the legal authority to hire another company to do work for them.
