I had recieved a breast pump as a gift, when i whent to use it was missing some things so my mother whent to return it. when she got to the store they gave her another one in replace ment. after I recuparated from the birth of my son I decided that I wanted to return the pump because I did not use it or need it, it was in new condition I never opened it.

I went to the store with the item and the sales check that mom had given me.

I gave the item to the cashier and the sales check mind you she was on the phone with a friend as she was doing my return and never acknoledge me, when she finished with her conversation she told me that she could not return the item because it had been checked as being return in the sales check. I explained to her that my mom had exchanged the first one and that this was the sales check they had given he.

The manager then came and told me the same thing so I explained to him that I did not realized what they have done in the other store because my mom had exchanged it and this was wwhat they had given her. His response was that he did not know if this was true and that he did not know where I had gottern this Item from. I told him that it was from my baby registry and he told me well I don't know that. I reminded him that this was not the first time he had done this to me and that it was really upsetiing to me becuase I was registered and I said to him that if I came there with no receipt that they would had given me a store credit or exchange it for something different and hes answer was no we don't do it for everybody.

So I asked him who are the people that you do it for and his answer was just certain people. That made me very upset since I am spanish I felt discriminated. And I tell you why I say this.

Right after my baby shower I returned some things at this store and I did not have the sales check for one item. It was a baby carrier everything else I had a sales check for. The cashier called the manager and it was Mr. lance and he told me that he could not return it because I had no proof of purchase and I told heim that it was part of the items that I was returning and he refuse to do it.

But before all this he had returned some items for another person with no problem or questions asked and they gave her a store credit and she had no proof of purchase (she was white) but when it came to my turn he refuse to do it so now I know I was discirminated because the same thing happened to me again, with the same manager. And before I forget when Mr. Lance advised me that he was not going to return the pump as I was walking away to go and get my husband and my son at the formula department, Mr. lance acknowledge me by sayin excuse me the door is that way and pointed to the exit and as I was going to let him know that i was going to get my husband at back of the store he interrupted me and told me again the exit is this way.

Well at this point I got very upset and I told him what I thought of him and how dear speak to me in that tone of voice and sarcasm. I knew where the exit was and we when back and forth as I whent to get my husband. As we where walking out Mr. Lance had his back towards the store and was telling his co worker that he did not care if I made a complaint about him that nothing was going to happen anyway. Then as we got closer I told my husband who was the person who was so rude and when Mr. Lance say my husband with me and my 1 month old baby he just got quiet his face turned red and did not say a word to me. And mind you my husband is (white jewish). onece he saw him he kept very quiet and did not continue.

I think that is very sad to know that people could get away with this. I made a complaint to there corporate office they called me back to ask me some questions and my information and told me that I will be getting another call for someone to speak to me about this incident but its been more then a week and nobody got back to me. Now I do not go back to this babys r us store. I go to another one it is out of my way but I rather shop there where I am not being treated as if I am different from other people just because I am spanish.

I am most upset because I did not get a call back from this company I guess they don't care to lose another customer. And I go to the other baybs r us becuase is hard for me to find lactose free milk from similac for my son. But as soon as I find a store where I could get this milk for him at any time of the day I will stop shopping at BABYS R US. I don't want to continue giving my money to a store that doesn't care about their customers.

I currently work for babies r us in a different state. Though a lot of people do have a problem with our return policy you were well with in your rights to make the return. Baby registries have a separate return policy, anything on your registry can be returned up to 90 days after the due date you had listed on your registry. This was obviously a nasty manager, especially because he was intentionally not following the registry policy for returns to do what it seemed as making a point. Not all people working at the stores are nice, and they abuse whatever they can for god knows what reason. Though I do not actually think it had anything to do with your ethnicity, I believe it actually sounded like your sex. Most male managers I have seen talk down to women, but not men. I am sorry you had to go through that, but you could definitely try to file some sort of discrimination act.

Listen if you have a history of being rude to the manager he probablly remembers you. It's more than likely not that your spanish, however that you quickly get rude with him.

To the other consumer with the check issue, there may have been network contention with the hollidays, which declined your check. But in the event that they just were unable to run your check correctly doesn't mean you should degrade them. You wrote what you said to her and you got snippy for no reason. When people get rude for no reason other people won't do everything they can to help them. Don't insult their wage, or that of the manager because they should be commended for working and not collecting the government checks like other people. Your the reason people hate to work retail, stop degrading others and work on yourself, because you obviously have some work to do, why get embarrassed if you know the money is there? don't get upset because the cashier was not perfect, especially when you are far from it yourself. By the way how much do you make??? let me geuss over $100,000, everyone on the internet seems to make that much.

Not a health issue

If it was a health issue they wouldn't have returned the first one. The second one is new in box. The man was clearly discriminating against the woman.

The reason for strict return policy on breast pumps is it's a health issue, and even with a receipt there's no way for a store to know if it's been used or not and resealed. Taking back a supposedly unused breast pump, or used one could put BRU at libility risk if that pump were sold to another customer and they contact an illness from it. Problem is retail stores see used items trying to be returned all the time after a customer is through with it, can you do that an automobile after you've drove it several months. No they'd laugh you out of the showroom. So to be safe it's best not take back Breast pumps regardless of the reason. Now trading out for a new one if the one you buy is defective in some way, because that one will be destroyed and a lost to BRU which eventually drives prices store wide up when BRU stocks 28,000+ items that people use then try to return. It's a big problem for all retail stores.

maritza, that is so horrible. around christmas time in 2004 i purchased over $400 in baby stuff for my son, i didnt have any cash on me or credit cards but i had my checks and id, so i was writing a check for the amount, and the little girl that doesnt know anything and not trained, told me oh why are you writing a check? i asked does it matter? dont you accept checks? she said well yheah, i said okay then. she put my check in the computer took my id info and said oh the check is declining, i asked why and if it is declining there should be a number where i can call to find out why . she said no theres not,but probably because there were not enough funds. i started laughing and said when you run a check it doesnt tell you how much funds are in there, this girl was so rude nothing printed saying it was declined ,only the words of this 18 year old brat. i was mad the manager came over and again said why dont you pay cash or credit card i told him because i didnt have them on me, he said to go home and come back and he would hold my items, i was pissed the girl after me wrote a check. said i said no you take checks do it again he took me to another lane and scanned all items again, he said it was declined i said okay where does it say that he didnt show me anything, they could tell i was mad, and older manager came over he took me to another lane and did the process again, and it was cleared, he said they were having a problem with there machines because of the check writting during the holidays he apologized i told him what had happened with the other 2, and how they need to train there employees instead of making them feel like criminals, this whole time it was the machine not that i didnt have any $$$$ in the bank, but they make $7.00 an hour and the managers probably a dollar more. i will never shop there again i was so humiliated while people listened to this. maritza i would complain to the b. b. b
they can not decide who they will return for, i would have your husband go in there and return it. good luck

Just because you don't like the return policy...

I work at a Babies R Us store (not the one in this report). There are a lot of things that people seem to not understand (or choose not to?) about our return policy.

We will accept any return with a receipt dated within 90 days. Without a reciept, we reserve the right to refuse any return.

I can only assume that, as you stated that you received the first pump as a gift, that you had no receipt. The store was very kind to allow you to exchange the pump - they have the right to refer you to the manufacturer. This may also be a law, depending on the state you live in.

The receipt they would then have given to you would have stated that you returned one pump without a receipt, and used the credit you received towards a new one. Technically, you still would be without a receipt.

If you did have a receipt at the time of the original exchange, the store was correct to mark the pump as returned and give the receipt back to you. Babies R Us sells a Buyer Protection Plan for circumstances where an item could break, etc. The store is not responsible for parts missing out of the box when you purchase it; you would have to contact the manufacturer regarding that. The store was kind enough to swap it out for you, but they could just as easily have referred you to the manufacturer.

And, as a side note, while Babies R Us does track items requested and items purchased off a baby registry, that does not entitle anyone to special rules superceding our existing return policy. We do not track information such as exactly when an item was purchased, or by whom, or how much was paid for it.
