VERIFYING EMPLOYMENT IS STANDARD PRACTICE

Your company may have a policy that requests for verification or employment/income must be in writing on letterhead so that they know they are releasing information to the correct party, not someone claiming to be from Bank of America.

Additionally, unless you signed a waiver at the time you were hired, the only information an employer can release is that you are employed there and date of hire. They cannot divulge salary (except to government authorities). Though it is really not the safest practice in the world to fax personal information, it is not illegal.
