I opened a $500.00 secured Visa card with Bank of America in 2003. I was told that if I kept the card in good order (no late payments, never overlimit) that at the end of 12 months they would "graduate" me to unsecured status, raise my credit limit, release the hold on my savings account and issue a new card. I sent messages to Online Customer Service and was told by THREE DIFFERENT representatives that this was true.

I asked Bank of America to consider graduating me to unsecured status a couple of months early. They declined the request because of my credit report. I asked them if I waited until the end of the 12 months if they would still base the decision on my credit report, and I was told yes.

I was told that I would be graduated to unsecured status based on my performance on the secured card, not my entire credit report, and I was told this by THREE DIFFERENT representatives. However, Bank of America refuses to stand by the statements of their customer service representatives.

When the customer service representative of any company tells me something, I consider that to be the official stand of the company. I expect to be able to count on the answers I get. Any company who would go back on their word as given by their customer service representative DOES NOT KNOW WHAT GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE IS ALL ABOUT.

I have written to several executives and others in Executive Relations and other bank departments, but to no avail; they will not change their mind. I was told that "We can't graduate your card." However, the correct statement is "We WON'T graduate your card."

I used to highly recommend Bank of America to everyone, and I always tried to get family, friends, and co-workers to open accounts there. However, I can no longer recommend Bank of America. I cannot in good conscience recommend any bank who goes back on their word.

I have also written a letter to Bank of America through Planet Feedback.

I am deeply, deeply disappointed in a bank that I used to think a lot about and highly recommend. I never realized that my own bank would go back on their word and not give a hoot about a very good customer.
