I chopped off the side/tip of my left index finger while chopping firewood. Drove my self to the McKee ER, presented my insurance card and was admitted. A young doctor came in, and looked at the finger--literally jus looked--he asked if I was right or left handed, then called for an x-ray to see if I had nicked the bone. I had not so he recomended no treatment at the time but that I see a hand specialist. A tech then cleaned & bandaged the finger, & gave me some pain meds.

Charge for him LOOKING at my finger, an x-ray, & a bandage?

--Pharmacy: $13

--X-Ray: $248

--Physician:  $291

--Emergency Room: $1,651

TOTAL: Over $2,203 !!

I was there for an hour & walked out with a bandage. That is $2,300? It is at Mckee.

Turns out Banner Health is not in my insurance network, so no coverage. I the person who registered my and took a copy of my insurance car had mentioned that fact I would not have gone in!

Ken

Colorado,

My rebuttal was on target and gave ACTUAL reasons for E.R pricing..

I did NOT miss the part about his insurance and my comments were on the mark.  He was VERY unhappy with the cost for the time spent on the treatment and exam.  My statements are factual.

I further have to wonder if he would have actually gotten up and hunted around for a facility that accepted his insurance while missing part of his finger.  I don't like the E.R pricing either, but take that up with those who use it free and the hospital to keep the E.R.'s open has to charge more to pay their staff.

I stand by my rebuttal.

Ken, your comment has nothing to do with the report. The author had an insurance at the time but could not use it because it is not on his insurance net work.

Back to the report, yes, the health care including hospital cost in the US is over price in every single thing! It is a rip off. Their argument is that they have to pay for research and development (R&D) of medication and equipment. I understand that the cost to pay those researchers and monopolize (patent) are high, but the only people who pay the price are the customers (patients)!

Ken

Colorado,

Unfortunately, those of us that can pay or have insurance have to pay more...

for those who can't or won't pay.  Illegal aliens are one of the prime abusers of the emergency room and get free to very low cost service.  The hospital can't even ask if they're in the country legally and by law have to treat them anyway.  They should thank the rest of us for subsidizing them.  I went into the emergency room, was admitted for one day and billed over $12,000.  So happy to help our non-paying "citizens", NOT!

Your rebuttal has nothing to do with the fact that i was grossly overcharged for almost no service.
