Complaint Review: Barbara's Springer Spaniels

Barbara's Springer Spaniels Barbara's springers Selling puppies with genetic disorders Calhoun Georgia

I bought two puppies from this breeder in March of 2017 after tragically losing my Springer to cancer. We were devastated with his loss and needed more "fur children", since we don't have kids.  The breeder assured me adamantly that his puppies are the best, free of any genetic disorders. I specifically mentioned hip dysplasia and eye issues, and he said his breed line is genetically "perfect".

One of my puppies developed severe hip and elbow dysplasia (which is a proven GENETIC disorder) around the age of five months. We were faced with the choice of either euthanizing the puppy or spending THOUSANDS of dollars on treatments to help his pain.  How could I put my puppy to sleep?  There was no way.   He gets hundreds of dollars worth of supplements every month and is facing a painful major surgery which is going to cost us about $1800.00 PER HIP.
He will never be able to play like other dogs or do agility/fly ball. We can't even take him on long hikes.   His brother ALSO has diagnosed hip dysplasia but thankfully his is mild. We are hoping we can get him to old age before his hips fail him completely.

I contacted the breeder who is in full denial and refuses to do anything to assist us.  I asked for the purchase price of the puppy back, nothing more.   I don't understand how someone can breed babies like this and let them live a life of pain and suffering.   I asked them to stop breeding this specific pair and they refuse.  Money is more important to them than the sanctity of a good life.  Sad.   DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE!

Also,. I've left several other reviews on different pages that disappear... so they take down bad reviews.  Good business, huh?

My boys DO have skin issues from allergies.  What skin issue does your puppy have?   My one boy (the one without the huge hip issues) has horrible allergies but DJ, the boy with the hip issues has them as well (just not as severe).  I just had to take them down and get them both a $105 each Cytopoint injection to help.  Chewie gets horrible sores on his stomach/groin area so I have to spray them daily.  I already have them on a grain free novel protein (venison and sweet potato) so that helped a bit.   It's worse in the summer, so the vet knows it's environmental allergies.  I do notice Chewie's ears get really bad with yeast whenever he has chicken, so we avoid anything with chicken in it.

Their Dad is "Savan Alabama's Southern Pride" for some reason they don't list him as Savan on the website anymore.. Maybe he's Charlie? The owner referenced that name in their email a few times.  Their Mom is Sugar.

Also, I wasn't "exorting cash payments" from them, I asked them to refund DJ's purchase price only to offset some of my costs.
Please respond, I'm interested to hear what skin condition your baby has.  The breeder will only offer to buy your dog back and throw them out with the pack they have in the yard.  They have EIGHT breeding females. That should have been a clue they are a puppy mill.

SO concerned but didn't even want to see the report?

Steve,

You are SO concerned but never would take me up on my multiple offers to bring DJ several hours down to consult with your veterinarian with all of the specialists information and vet findings.   I offered to send you all documentation and xrays and you haven't even cared enough to want to see them.

EVERYTHING that can be "tested" (like a lab rat?)  has been done to DJ.  You want me to give my dog back to you, whom I desperately LOVE back in order to put him through more painful TESTS?  That doesn't sound like you really love these dogs if you are willing to to take him from the home and brother he loves instead of letting him have best care here.   He lives in pain every day. Why would you want him to go through more for nothing?

His brother also has mild hip dyplasia.  This will probably be the case with other puppies from this breeding pair. It hopefully won't be noticeable until he gets old.  I'm sure other puppies you've sold have had hip problems when they're old and it's just attributed to old age.  I've offered all documentation. All I asked was help off setting the literal THOUSANDS (We're at around $5,000 now) of dollars I have spent on this dog you had a "health guarantee" on.  The health guarantee only covers if they get immediately sick after sale.

If there is nothing wrong with your dogs, why do you not offer a genetic guarantee?  Makes you wonder why.

We have been breeding Springers for the love of the animals for over 30 years and have had zero complaints prior to this. We offered this customer, to buy the puppy back at a 100% refund so we could have further testing and she refused. She insisted on cash payments to avoid slandering us and we refused. All our puppies are completely healthy, have no history of any genetic disorders, have all their vaccinations, are double registered and each and every one come with a health guarantee.

Genetic issues confirmed by specialist

Not all of the pups have the same parents. She has 8 breeding females (not breading). My two puppies both have hip issues and are brothers from a specific breeding pair. I'm glad yours don't have issues. Hip issues can only be confirmed by x-ray.

Wonderful Healthy Puppies

I have had the honor of getting puppies from Barbara's Springer Spaniels. All of my puppies have had health checks, all were very healthy. I have also purchased a grown male for breading. Our puppies were very healthy, never had a bad health check up. One of our puppies does commercials in Tampa. Barbara and her husband are wonderful, they show you around the farm. Very clean. In the future I will buy more puppies from this breader.
