Complaint Review: Barrett Group

Barrett Group The Barrett Group Unrealistic promises Internet

A sales person claimed that they are getting 2000 resumes a month, of which 200 are "approved" by their executive board if they seem "marketable".  She claimed that they will provide personalized search, contacts to firms, and coaching.

If these promised services plus the ones on their web page are taken together, this would require at least 2 hours per week of coaching time, not including leads research.  They promise service for 1 - 3 years.  Which means that they would have 2400 clients at any given time at a minimum.

Taken together, Barrett would need at least 100 coaches, and that does not include research and admin staff (basis: 50 work weeks, 2200 work hours per year).  I heard they have less than 30 coaches.

So, either their client numbers are overstated, or they only deliver a fraction of the promised services.  Either way, the numbers don't add up.  That's pretty worrisome for a firm that expects a $ 9000 - 12000 fee in good faith.

A number was simply misunderstood, not mistated.

This person is referring to statistics we often state during telephone conversations with people who are interested in our services.  Apparently, the listener misunderstood, and its easy to see why.

Yes, we often receive up to 2000 resumes in a given month.  By choice, we are a small, boutique consultancy and our core staff, with their biographies, are proudly displayed on our website, www.careerchange.com. In a given year, we will work with about 200 clients; in 2009 the total was 188. It appears the resumes received per month and the clients handled per year numbers were confusing.

This person, who certainly could have checked the facts before filing an unfounded complaint, was certainly correct in the arithmetic.  We couldnt possibly handle 200 clients a month.  It is an important function of my role as President to ensure that the proper complement of staff and resources is in place before accepting a new client, and I take that responsibility seriously.

Dan Resendes, our Vice President, and I were both originally Barrett Group clients, so we are intimately aware of the needs our clients might have throughout the course of their program with us.
