Complaint Review: Bayshore Auto Sales Pat Canavan

After much looking for a car that I could afford, I finally found one at Bayshore. A 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier for $399. What a deal! What a nightmare.

When I originally spoke to Pat Canavan he told me that he would sell me the car for $300. Then when I came there with the money he said he never said that. He also originally said that he would arrange temporary insurance for me. Well I had to call up an insurance company right there on the spot and give them my friends credit card # just to make an initial payment. But all this was minor since he said the car was in good condition (except the body) with only "81,609" miles. Long story short I bought the car and 4 days later it died. No warning lights no alarms nothing. It just died.

I called my mechanic he says that it is most likely a cracked cylinder head and a blown head gasket, for him to fix it it will cost $500 (not to mention the other problems with the car like missing vacuum hoses and what not). Apparently somebody put some of that stop leak stuff into the radiator to cover this major problem. So I call Pat and tell him this. He tells me to take it to his mechanic, Mikes Service Center (6 Executive Drive, Toms River) and what ever is wron with the car he says he will pay for. That seems fair. They say the exact same thing only they want $1500.

The garage calls me up the next day asking me what I want to do with the car. I tell them that Pat said he would pay for it, and they say that they spoke with him and he said that he isn't. I call up Pat and ask whats going on and he tells me that he never said that he would pay to fix the car. In addition to having to pay the $65 to have the car looked at.

The next thing he tells me is that he is going to take the total price from the dead car and credit it toward the price of a new car. Namely a 1995 chevrolet cavalier for $1750 (which he then jacked the price up to $1950 2 days later) and all I would have to do is bring him $100 down and $100 a week until it is paid off.

When I came with the money. He said that I only had a $75 credit with him. This guy is a complete scam artist. He took my money, he has my plates and won't give them to me, Now I have no car (which I need for my job) and am about to get fired all because this guy wanted to make a quick buck. I urge anyone that has a problem with Bayshore Auto Sales to go to the Ocean County Consumer Protection Board and fill out a complaint. Pat Canavan needs to be shut down!!
