If You Deal With BBT, You Know This Is The Truth

#16Consumer Comment

Sun, May 17, 2009

I'm with you, Nana, and contact me if you want someone to stand with you on a class action suit. BBT is doing the same thing Bank of America just settled their own suit for doing. As for the rest of you who obviously do not bank with BBT and have no idea what she is talking about, well, this is America and you have free speech but your comments are not relevant here. Many of us who bank with BBT have proof on paper of this scheme to intentionally delay posting deposits until NSF fees can be charged.

You don't know me and have no idea of my life's experiences. But between your posts to both me and Steve, it seems as if the only one being rude here is you. We are trying to explain what your issue probably is and all you want to do is hurl insults. You never did answer any of the comments directly, instead deciding to go down the insult road. So if you are going to comment anymore please answer the questions that were asked of you. Was the money posted and available BEFORE you spent it?

When this happens again at another bank, try and remember what suggestions were given to you.

Understand the system

#16Consumer Comment

I have no doubts that you do not correctly understand the banking system as a whole. There are several steps that must be taken in order to collect a check that has been deposited and you should be blaming not only your self for using your account when funds are not avaliable but also, all of the criminals who have commited bank fraud over the years. I'm also sure that all of your fees came from debit card purchases?! Most people don't understand debit/credit cards and how the system works. By law, ALL BANKS must pay debit/credit card transactions thur your account. You can't pick which ones to pay and which ones to send back because you spent money that you did not have. SAVE your money, stop spending it and demanding that everyone fix your mistakes!
Also, you as a consumer, should always read the fine print. Blame yourself for not being educated on how your account works. I would highly suggest using a different bank and see what results you have with them.

To Robert concerning BBT comment to the "op"

Ok let's see. You sound as rude as you probably are. I would suggest you get some life experience and then use it. You really should think about going to school and learning how to play well with others. You might want to see a Doctor about getting that big things you sit on off your shoulders. You have no clue what you are talking about. So guess what the "OP" thinks the little baby boy should get some respect for his elders. I would hate to have to learn the life lessons ahead of you.

What does being a teller have to do with it..

Okay the OP's 20 years working for a bank beats my time working for banks by..oh...20 years. Yet I don't seem to overdraw accounts, and yes I have run my balances down very close to zero...Ummmm

The OP stated "..The money WAS in the bank before anything came through."

Well even though the OP worked in a bank for 20 years she seemed to forget one thing, that I am pretty sure has always been the practice(at least for the last decade or so). That is even if a check is deposited at 11AM in the morning, it does not get POSTED until that evening, AFTER the Debit(s).

So yes for example if they had $50 in the account, spent $100. Then deposited $55 to cover the amount they overdrew. They did NOT have the money in the account when they spent it. Because the $100 would be debited BEFORE the $55 was credited when everything posts overnight.

While the OP did not come right out and say it, it does appear she was relying on the "float". Which 20 years ago, even 5 years ago was usually safe to do. However, with they way checks and debit cards are now processed(by banks and merchants) there is no longer any float. You have to make sure you do not spend the money if you do not have the money in the account at that time.

Curious statements...

#16Consumer Comment

Sun, January 25, 2009

Two lines caught my attention. One from the original report:

"tHEY DID NOT CREDIT OUR DEPOSITS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CREDITED UNTIL EVERYTHING HAD CAME THROUGH AND THE DEPOSIT WAS PUT IN BANK BEFORE 2PM THAT DAY."

And one from an update by the author:

"The money WAS in the bank before anything came through."

So we have two statements that the money was in the account before any transactions had "come through". Note that the author doesn't say that the money was in the account before the transactions were made, but before they "came through".

It really does sound as if she wrote checks or authorized transactions and exceeded her available funds. After that she made a deposit thinking that it would cover the transactions already made.

It just doesn't work that way anymore.

My advice to anyone who banks with BBT is to close out your account. Credit unions do not rip off customers, go to a credit union. The same thing that happened to me is happening all over the country. Things are bad enough in the economy today without people being taken advantage of by the very banks that our tax money is bailing out.

First of all I have worked for banks for 20 years and I started as teller and went to the top. You are the one who needs to get an education. You have no clue of what you are talking about. The money WAS in the bank before anything came through. I suggest you read the rest of the comments about BBT. Guess what I had been banking with BBT for 30 years until they went to this current policy. So you need to get your facts straight before you start to judge people you have no clue about. I guess you sit and look up what people say about things that happen to them. GET A LIFE!

Nana, I suggest you read the funds availability policy. No Rip Off here! And..

#16Consumer Comment

Sat, January 24, 2009

Nana,

By the wording in your post, you admitted to making transactions when you did not have the funds to cover them at the time you initiated the transactions.

The days of floating transactions is over.

You MUST have the funds AVAILABLE FOR USE in your account BEFORE initiating a transaction against those funds. This is clearly spelled out in the terms and conditions YOU signed for when you opened the account.

Furthermore, it is common practice of MOST banks to process checks/charges BEFORE deposits/credits in the same business day. Again, you just have to read.

FYI...I have been with BB&T for over 2 years now and have never had even one problem with them of any kind.

As far as the class action lawsuit goes, this is the jibberish of the uneducated. Do you know how much money it takes to do a class action lawsuit? It could cost millions of dollars against a bank of this size. And, you would have to pay all "costs" up front as there would not be a lawyer dumb enough anywhere to take this case on contingency.

Get some education. Knowledge is power.

You can't....

Follow the posting guidelines here and not type your report in all caps, I would imagine you don't follow the guidelines at the bank about not overdrawing your account there either.

I think the fees they charge at any bank are outrageous and should be capped. But...it is YOUR OWN fault for the most part for spending what you dont have......for keeping such a low balance that there is always the risk of a post versus pend problem causing ODF....and for not keeping an accurate up to date register. How can you blame the bank for THAT? Blaming them for outrageous fees is one thing....

BUT......screaming class action suit is ludicrous at best. You certainly don't have the amount of money it will take to file one when you cant even keep your own account out of overdraft.

I do feel really bad that soooooooo many people are being crippled by this very thing and dont or cant pick up on exactly WHY it continues to happen. NONE of us can afford constant fees
