In 2005, Beneficial contacted me and my wife about refinancing our mortgage.  They made promises of the best loan available for the market.  They had us fill out the loan paperwork and add both my wife and me onto the new mortgage.  We paid for the protection in case one of us died.

They gave us two loans. One mortgage loan and an additional loan to pay other bills.  They had us put the insurance on both loans.   We did.  My wife passed away and they paid off the smaller loan.  Then returned the premium for the mortgage and refused to pay the mortgage loan off.  I still have not cashed that check, because I an trying to find a lawyer to help fight the company.

After years of trying to explain that I can not afford the mortgage, they are trying to foreclose.  They first had me submit numerous applications for a loan modification.  They asked for one set of documents and then a different set of documents. So I called the loan officer, and during the course of the interview, she said that they didn't know my had passed.  So, that begs the question, who mailed my premium back.

As recent as April 2014, I met a 78 year old woman going through the same thing.  She is paying her mortgage and ends up with only $25 left over each month.  The conversation came about when she stated that she wish she could get a reversed mortgage.  I asked her why not go for it.  Then she told me her story about her husband died in 1998 and left her with the policy from Beneficial but Beneficial didn't pay it off either. Happened to be the same branch office that I had my account.

Interesting enough, that particular branch was closed on 2006.
