I went to Best Buy searching for a business plan software package. I found one that by the cover made a lot of sense for what I needed. When I got to the cash register, I was informed that the store did not take cash. No greenbacks, wampum, coins, Legal Tender coined or printed by the Government of the United States of America. Only credit cards and debit cards, screw you very much.

I was astonished and after making a fuss and waiting 15 minutes finally someone came and offered to take my cash THIS TIME. "But don't expect us to take it in the future."

Great, talk about not wanting business. Apparently they can afford to pay 1 to 3 percent of the purchase cost of goods for... What? No cash??

But just to top it off, the product I bought was defective. When I called JIAN to get support for my software (BizPlan Builder 2004) I was told by Hiedi in ther tech department that ALL THE BIZPLANS SOLD RETAIL HAD PROBLEMS. Great. They sent me a download to make the plan work. Unfortunately, IT DIDN'T WORK EITHER. When I tried to call the company (Jian)since, I have been disconnected or put into voice mail and have not heard from them for FOUR days now. I finally figured that being on the east coast, the only reason they answered the phones the first time was I called at seven-thirty AM west coast time. Probably a mistake that I got thru.

When I returned the software to Best Buy I was informed they would be happy to replace it, WITH THE SAME SOFTWARE. Now I may not be the brightest bulb, but if the manufacturer knows ALL the retail product being sold is defective, and there were seven or eight boxes of the software on the shelf when I bought my package and there are none now, do you really expect me to believe Best Buy has no problems with any other software?

According to Best Buy I miraculously was the first person to have a problem with the software. So how come Hiedi knew all the software sold retail was defective?
Best buy seems to be getting so full of themselves they have totally forgotten the customer. As a reminder to the executives who run Best Buy let me remind you why you are not there. IT ISN"T TO MAKE LIFE A HASSLE, LIE, CHEAT, STEAL and it isn't TO COMMIT FRAUD ON A MASSIVE SCALE. Does the name Ken Lay mean anyhting to you? It does to the State's Attorney for the State of Maryland in Montgomery County.

They found my little tale of woe interesting. And just to make sure you get it, I am gong to insure this little piece of software fraud costs you thousands in legal fees and with some luck, jail time. You will not get away with commting fraud, selling defective products and conspiring to steal consumer funds with a manufacturer.

I have to agree with the other employee that commented earlier.  Here's an example... I work in the camera department in the back of the store.  I'm not a cashier.  I do have a cash drawer signed out to me, but my register is in the back of the store, and customers won't know to walk back there to buy something.

When there are too many customers for the cashier or cashiers to handle, they will call over the headsets, "Code 1 to the front."  Which means, anyone who knows how to operate a register, come to the front and help with the overflow of customers.  So I will drop what I'm doing, if I'm not with a customer, and go help out.  But again, I am not a CASHier, so I can't take CASH.  I don't have a drawer in my name, and if I take incorrect change, or give back incorrect change, someone else will get in trouble and possibly get fired.  So only the person who singed out the drawer can take cash on it.

I can take debit and credit cards, but no cash.  Yes, it sounds absurd, but it's the way things work.  The person may have been joking when they said don't expect them to take cash in the future, if that's what they actually said.  Best Buy will always take cash, as long as it is recognizable as legal tender.

Ok. That must be a new thing because when I worked there, every register had a drawer and I never saw anyone denied the opportunity to pay cash....(I worked at BB in 97'-98')

It sounds like they don't schedule enough cashiers if the customer service employees have to come over to check people out...The stores in my area have a minimum of like 4 cashiers for most of the hours the store is open...I guess I would ask the author how busy the store was when he was there...

Why they won't take cash:

In order for a cashier to take cash, there must be a cash drawer in the register.
For there to be a cash drawer in the register, the cashier must sign the cash drawer out and place it into the register.
After the drawer is signed out, ONLY the person who signed it out is allowed to open the drawer. This is to make sure that if money is missing from the drawer, they know who is responsible for it.
Sometimes when there are many customers waiting in line, the cashiers will call for help and other people, such as sales people or customer service representatives, will come over and work the registers.
These temporary cashiers CANNOT take cash simply because there is not a cash drawer in their register. They could go get a cash drawer, but usually by the time they've signed one out, the excessive lines are gone.
If they DID take the time to go get a cash drawer to make life more convenient for the 5-10% of customers who pay in cash, instead of bitching about not taking cash, you would all be bitching about how long you had to stand in line.
There is no way to keep everyone happy. We choose to favor the 90% of customers who don't pay cash and don't want to stand in a long line.
I'm sure this was explained to the op, but he seems like the kind of person who hears what's convenient to him. Have fun with your court case.

Best Buy.. Cash Issue

#7Consumer Comment

Mon, February 22, 2010

I just happened upon this report and couldn`t pass up the chance to respond to it.  Back in Nov. of 2007 I was shopping at a Best Buy in Mesquite TX. I was shopping for anti virus/spyware software. I found what I needed and went to check out. I had the very same experience as the person in the report. Best Buy didn`t want to take my cash. They acted like it was a major big deal, and I was told to get out of the line I had waited in and go to another line. They said this was THE ONLY LINE THAT ACCEPTED CASH. I was in shock and to this day I am still stunned.
