Big 5 is a company that provides great work experience in management, customer service, cashiering, advertising, stocking, etc. They even have great benefits and decent pay. Here's the problem.

I worked for Big 5 for 2 years and was canned after 4 write-ups in a years time. Sounds okay until you read between the lines. The 4 write-ups were the only 4 mistakes that I made during my time there. It was at another store under another manager altogether.
The two of us constantly butted heads because of his refusal to try new ideas and my refusal to let people slack off without consequence. The mistakes I made were common mistakes throughout Big 5 and while others caught a break or were allowed to slide, I got the write-up. After my 4th write-up, the corporate office suspended me and my career laid in the hands of the guy that I butted heads with.

The corporate office asked him what to do with me and he said to cut me. This guy left work while on the clock to attend college courses, gave me the combination to the safe and a set of keys when he is not supposed to (I didn't want either), and he favored another trainee over myself. After notifying the corporate office of my concerns with their decision and the current store manager, I awaited justice.

Since then, the guy has been given a brand new store and allowed to keep his job without consequence. While I made common mistakes and acknowledge them, I felt the fire was excessive. Though the guy showed total disregard and disrespect for his duties and responsibility and kept his job, I am glad they let me go because I am on to bigger and better things with a much better paycheck. They do not take care of their employees so be careful.

I appreciate your response to it. Honestly, you are the only one to come forward and address the issues I presented. I called the "we care" hotline, I called the LP manager per his request regarding complaints and/or concerns. Nothing was done. A different set of rules applied to me than to others. Evidence was my being held responsible for certain mistakes while others were not. In no way do I not take responsibility for my mistakes. The write-ups were at my fault and no one else's. However, I did not like being singled-out. I was subject to a personal beef with another employee that happened to be a manager. That's my reason for the complaint.

#3UPDATE Employee

I am a long term corporate employee of Big 5 in the distribution/operations area. Yes, Big 5 is a VERY old fashioned, very strict company. That said, it is also a well run, profitable growing company in a tough retail environment. Big 5 holds each and every employee to a strict set of standards and it is all thoroughly explained at time of hire. Employee's are monitored and held accountable for their actions. If you knew your manager was ripping the company off, then why didn't YOU report it to Corporate Loss Prevention and or the "We Care" line ? You could have remained anonymous. 4 write-ups in less than 2 years ? I doubt this was an "ego" thing. Most people are fired after their THIRD write-up, so you did get cut some slack. You got your more second chances than most, so move on, we'll be fine without you. Fresno's numbers aren't the greatest anyway, cubes moved are down. And don't worry this links been forwarded to Loss Prevention, so if your manager (or is it your "first" ?) is still going to school on our dime, the new camera system will bust his chops......
