In February of 2008, I attended the sportsmans show in Harrisburg PA, and made a $2500.00 deposit on a moose hunt for 5 guys ($500 a piece) with DJ Enns of Black Bear Island Lodge in LaRonge, SK, Canada. In February of 2009 I returned to the show to finalize the plans and was told by him that the area that we were to hunt was destroyed by wildfires.  I now believe that it was a lie.  He agreed to return the deposit as this was no fault of ours, and cancel the trip.

After numerous calls and e-mails I still have not received a dime. I even offered to go a do a bear hunt, so as not to loose the money.  I got no reply from him.  I hunted 2 previous times with him and can't believe that he would treat a repeat customer in this way.

Do Not place a deposit on a hunt with him unless you can afford to loose the money!

This is not the first time this happened. I don't know all the details of the individual situations but the stories are similar. Deposits made, something is wrong, inhibits travel to lodge, customer tries to get in touch with lodge or Mr. Enns,, no response...uses Canadian laws to keep money and not provide service.

I agree with the original report here. The exact same thing happened to me, and I have the documentation as proof that what I say is true. Apparently this guy has made a habit of taking people's money and bolting.

I read with interest the report of the bear hunter who claims he was ripped off.  Personally, I think there must be a different agenda.  I have been to his lodge 3 different times and can't say enough about how open, friendly, and fair DJ Enns is to his patrons/sportsmen.  A nicer person you will never meet, and the same can be said about his wife, Dawn, and his 2 girls who both work at the camp.  I am not a bear hunter, but I did go one year in May when all the other guys at the camp were bear hunters.  Every one got their bear.  I have a friend that has been there to hunt MANY times and he keeps going back, and every year gets his bear.  By the way, if the bear hunters like to fish, there is plenty of opportunity to fish at a World Class fishing lodge at no extra charge.  All the cabins are new, as is the main lodge, the food is great and plenty of it, and the shore lunches are unmatched.  I have caught many trophies at the camp (Northern Pike > 41") with my personal best 46".  My fishing buddy caught a 48" pike there also.

I would really like to hear DJ's side of the story in the Original report.  I am sure it is a very different story than the one presented above.  I know DJ pretty well, and I really doubt there is much truth to this guy's complaint.
