In a recent episode about cellulite, Dr. Oz revealed that creams with caffeine and retinol can effectively reduce
the appearance of cellulite. Since the airing of the episode, a slew of cellulite creams have emerged, all claiming
to contain the two ingredients. Having tried many creams and treatments in the past with little effect, I was
skeptical but decided to try it for myself. After sifting through pages of results on Amazon.com, I purchased the
best seller – Bodishape “CELLULITE CREAM - MOST POTENT CAFFEINE & RETINOL FORMULATION.” A 4 oz jar cost me $39.95
with free shipping.

When it arrived, I curiously read through the 30+ ingredients. Caffeine was in the list – but what I found troubling
was that Retinyl Palmitate was listed in the ingredients as Retinol. Although both Retinyl Palmitate and Retinol
are forms of Vitamin A, structurally and functionally they are entirely different ingredients. Retinol is the pure
form of Vitamin A that stimulates collagen fiber growth. Retinyl palmitate (a much cheaper ingredient) is an ester
(chemical compound) formed from the reaction of retinol and palmitic acid. Many studies have found that Retinyl
Palmitate encourages the formation of malignant, potentially cancer-causing cells in the skin.

Due to these findings, the EWG (a non-profit organization) issued a statement recommending manufacturers of
cosmetics, sunscreens, and other personal care products remove retinyl palmitate from all products to be used on
sun-exposed skin, and that consumers avoid buying products that contain this chemical.
