My story begins with a car I purchased practically online. I knew excactly what model and color I wanted. I put a down payment of 100$ over the phone with my credit card and went to Brewster Honda at the end of the week to pick up my car.

When I met the salesmen I spoke to, I told him I'm no longer interested in the model I asked for because my wife was not happy about driving a manual transmission. What I wanted to do was purchase the more expensive automatic. So I opologized and figured he will be making more money anyway so what's the problem?.. well his manager got involved and was really playing hardball with me. He tried to make it seem as if I caused them a really big problem.

He told me it would cost over a $1000 more for the automatic. My research on the internet showed that the dealer cost for automatic was $600 hundred dollars. Apparently this offended him and he threw the papers at me and told me if I dont want to pay that price I can get the hell out of there and say goodbye to my deposit. So I did! and went to Pace Honda in New Rochelle where I was treated professionally and saved a couple of hundred bucks. So I made out in the end and brewster Honda lost out on a sale.

Online Ordering's Sort Of Like Priceline.com

#2Consumer Suggestion

Although you were certainly owed a more courteous reception, the problem here is yours, and you got off easy losing only $100.

When you make a bid (as on Priceline) you agree that you will buy the item if the item and price meets your specs.

The dealer got you what you requested. He may have had to turn away another buyer since the unit was set aside for you. If you then decide not to honor your commitment, you lose the deposit as liquidated damages.

If you're not sure of what you want, online bidding's not the way to go. Use a conventional dealer, test drive, and then negotiate your best deal. That way you'll get what you require.

Sorry dealer didn't want to negotiate on the upgrade. Perhaps the pencil was too sharp in the online deal, and there was no more bargaining room.
