First off, it's all a matter of integrity. When YOU signed the contract, YOU agreed to make each and every payment on time, every time! YOU are paying a high APR because the banks didn't want to deal with YOU because of YOUR self constructed poor reputation of paying YOUR bills on time. Here YOU are today...crying, whining and wailing because of the collection consequences YOU caused by STILL being a late payer and of course, it's all their fault, isn't it? YOU haven't learned anything about credit responsibility, have you? Yep...some people are serial deadbeats for life!

You owe

Where is the RipOff? You still owe $1000 and I would bet that $1000 that with the exception of having a zero balance, nowhere in your loan agreement did it state that once you got your balance to a certain point or you have been paying on it for a certain amount of time that you were no longer subject to reposession. Telling you something they have the legal right to do is not a threat. It is how you handle that as to what they do. If you basically ignore them or give them some sort of "entitlement" attitude that they can't reposess the car because there is only $1000 left, they will have a tow truck out to your house faster than you can say Reposession.  So if they haven't reposessed it yet it would be to your advantage to work something out on their terms because quite frankly they are holding all of the cards..or should I say title.

The good news is that you are probably at such a point that even after they sell your car at auction even with the fees they are likely to get more than the balance owed, and you may not end up with a deficiency balance and may even get a few dollars back. Of course if you still do end up with a deficency balance don't think just because it would be a few dollars that they will just go away. It is very likely that they would continue collection efforts and possibly file a suit against you.

By the way don't think any other lender would be any different.
