My husband received a letter and a check in the mail from this company. They told him he had an outstanding sweepstakes or lottery claim. They said he had until Sept 10 to claim his prize or the fund would go back to the company. They said the enclosed check for $2950 was to cover taxes and processing fees and that the check was cut from the escrow balance of $67000.

The check and the letter both looked very legit at first glance. But after rereading the letter a few times, I noticed a few errors that a law firm would not have missed. There were a few sentences that if spoken were very broken english that perhaps a foreigner would have. They only gave us one number to call, and it was not an 800 number. One would think if they were a law firm specializing in unclaimed prizes, they would want an 800 number.

The check did not have any water marks. And when copied, it was a straight copy. Checks from major firms when copied have void all over them.

When we dialed the number, a fellow with a very thick accent answered and simply said "what?" When I told him about the letter and check, I asked is this legit? He said, "oh yes. Call back in 30 minutes." Then he hung up.

That is when I started to reread and look at everything very closely. The number nor the company name comes up on yellowpages.com or the better business bureau.

So, I don't know what they are after, but they clearly have some of my husband's personal information. I sincerely hope all they have is his name and address.

Beware of anything that sounds too good to be true.
