We did not have a positive experience at all with Janice of Burkhart Interiors. In short, she was not forthcoming with cost plus invoices, we found numerous billing discrepancies, we never received a rug she said was on order for months, we never received a return phone call, email or even a return text regarding the status of our rug either. We ended up taking her to small claims court. We also know of many other people in our area who have also had trouble with this designer and have found themselves in situations very similar to ours. Please find a detailed review below.

Detailed review: We ordered a rug that she told us was gray/blue, but unfortunately when the rug arrived it was more of a sea foam green/yellow/gold and did not flatter our formal living room or gray chair fabric. The designer did apologize for this variance in color but unfortunately it was not a rug we were able to work into another room because of the size and color. We tried. The rug company agreed to let us exchange the large rug that they said was known to be green, for two smaller rugs, one 8x10 and one 4x6. The designer was in touch with the rug company to facilitate this exchange for us beginning October of 2013. However, we never received the smaller 4x6 rug despite the designer telling us multiple times in email and verbally it was on order since December of 2013. When we received no follow up months later (March) regarding the rug status, we tried contacting her for approximately a one-month period via phone, email, and text but were unsuccessful in our attempts. We ended up taking this designer to small claims court to try and recoup our loss (around $750.00) on the rug, but the justice of the peace could not rule in our favor based on a technicality he said that the rug company should have also been named in the suit. We don't have proof regarding the 4x6 rug trail. The designer showed up to court with 2 attorneys and no written correspondence from the rug company regarding our 4x6 rug order. At the time of court it had been 9 months since the rug was on order per Burkhart interiors.

We also asked the designer to provide itemized receipts for other purchases she made for us when what we were being charged for and what we received did not match. Specifically, we were charged over $400 dollars for a marble top that we never received, and despite multiple requests, we were never given proof that the designer ever incurred a charge for this top from the company. We verbalized and placed in writing multiple times that if she were able to provide an itemized receipt or invoice from the company that we would reimburse her for the top we never received, however no such receipt was ever provided. The designer never disputed that we did not receive this marble top from this particular company, but the only evidence we ever saw regarding this purchase was a redacted credit card receipt that totaled the exact amount it would have cost for what we did actually receive from the company plus shipping of $250.

We also asked her many times before the rug and billing discrepancies to provide a sketch for a bookcase we wanted her to design, but she never did get back to us on that or respond to our request for a painting quote. However, we ended up having a fantastic result with another design company and are enjoying our new units that were just completed, painted, and installed.

Overall, we did not have a positive experience. We would have liked to receive the 4x6 rug without going to court, and would have also liked to avoid the extra hundreds of dollars in shipping charges we incurred when trying out sample rugs before choosing the exchange rugs. We did not agree sign a non-disparagement agreement with burkhart's attorney or accept a settlement days before court for about half of the rug cost in hopes of saving someone else from experiencing something similar.
