CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL Officer Stephen Mello, #11925 Filing a false police report after being disciplinhed for wrongdoing Weaverville, California
This is a bit unusual. I am a retired CHP sergeant and do not like some of the things I read here. But you have a good product. Here goes. In February, 2009, while still working, I was informed that one of my subordinates, Officer Stephen Mello, after being caught vandalizing state property located in the CHP office he was asigned to, was issued a bad guy letter. Very soon thereafter he made a formal criminal complaint accusing me of trying to run him over in July of 2007. Yes, 2 1/2 years later. His excuse for waiting so long was that he reported it to two other commanders who had refused to do anything. The subsequent investgation clearly, lt me repeat, clearly absolved me of any wrongdoing. In fact, the local sheriffs office did not want to do the investigation and thus the CHP did. The county DA reviewed the report and declined to file charges for a lack of evidence. When I got a VERY redacted copy of the report, it was clear to see Mellos' own witnesses completely had an opposite recollection of events. I forgot to mention that during this alledged incident I was off duty and Mello was on duty. Of course, had I done this serious offence, why was'nt I pulled over or stopped.
