About a month ago, my wife and I decided to trade in our 5th wheel for a toyhauler so we could travel with our bike. We looked at numerous dealerships before stepping foot into Camping World. We were met by a salesman named Steve. Very polite but not very knowledgeable about the layout of the sale campers. He took us around the lot where we had to remind him several times that we were looking for a toy hauler! After several missed attempts we were headed back to the building with I noticed one he had not shown us. He was confident that it was not a toyhauler but we stopped to take a look!

Well it was a toyhauler with the floor plan we had described to him. Unfortunately this one was sold, but he could have one brought in from his sister store in Cedar Falls, IA.

My wife and I departed and when we did some research on that toyhauler we reached back out to Steve. I told Steve what are budget was and how much we could put down, along with our trade in that we were upside down in. Not a problem he said we can meet your monthly payment, just come back in and we can run the numbers.

A few days later I return and we talk about the camper and how much its going to be, including the extra transportation costs to get it to Omaha. I see him write down the price the camper, which didn't seem right to me!  During our talk he wrote up all the numbers then rights something on the sheet at the very bottom, incl trailer hitch! He leans over and whispers at me, thats a little trick I do to get you a free trailer hitch! Well we have attempted to purchase 3 trailers over a 5 year span from this dealership and the free (its a secret) trailer hitch was the same act!

Steve returns from the General Managers Office (Scott) and smiles and saids we got it! He then lays down this paper with outragous numbers, double the monthly payment, 10X the down payment, and 5 extra years on the loan. But does he mention any of this, NO! I got you guys a free hitch! He tells me its a $1800 hitch! Well Steve keep the hitch and deduct that from the price, since the hitch I need sells for $399 in your store!

Scott than steps into the office! Lets see what we can do to get you into that trailer. He starts by saying, I haven't used any of my advertising budget this month, I can you that it's $4000. I'll give you the Camping World in house finance credit of $2000.  I asked a few times about cost of the trailer and my trade in, the subject was quickly changed.

Well I tell both Scott and Steve that I have to think about and will get back to them.  When I get home I do some research on the computer and the price they wrote down for the trailer was actually $3000 than the asking price at the other dealership.

I called Cedar Falls and asked some question about the camper, because I could knock off the $1500 in transportation fees and get the trailer at the asking price. I told Matt my situation and how much we had to give down and our trade in. I also said how much we would be willing to pay a month. Matt said that sounds more than reasonable hold on one second. He gets back on the phone and says I think we earned your business! Than starts with some outragous numbers, I said did you not hear what I wanted for a monthly payment and how much we had to put down. He goes back to the sales manager Mike then back on the phone with me, we are going to need atleast 10x what you have for a down payment.

Well that call ended! I search around for some other dealerships and found a non-camping world in MO.  This dealership was very polite, I explained that they have the trailer we are looking for and wanted to talk numbers. I gave them our monthly payment, how much we could but down and our trade in. He called back about an hour later and said, sorry we can meet your monthly payment but we came close! well it was $25 more a month! I explained to him what was happening with us at Camping World and he took the camping worlds numbers and told me how much I was going to be paying for that camper!

No wonder they won't let you look at the sheet, they had bumped the price up to almost the MSRP and gave us dirt on the trade in.

I told Bob we would make arrangements to take a day trip to MO to look at the trailer.

I get an email from Camping World in the mean time, saying they were reviewing their database and was wondering if I'm still in the market for a new RV.

Well I reply to that email with the quote I got from MO and said if you can beat that quote with the RV from Cedar Rapids than lets talk! Well thats when I get the phone call from hell, Steve calls and says he talked with Cedar Falls and that was not a deal they had made with me. Well hold on Steve, I didn't make a deal with Cedar Rapids I just called to see if they could do better than you!  Well he then goes on to tell me that they would still like to work with me but since its been 7 days and a new month my trade in has dropped over $2000.

That is why I will never step foot on Camping Worlds lots again!
