We bought a male, AKC purebred Golden Retriever puppy in February 2004 (born November 15th, 2003) from Canyon Meadows. The dog began displaying an abnormal gait at age 6 months. The breeder did not return our phone call asking for information on what might be wrong with our puppy. Veterinary exam and x-ray confirmed severe Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD.) Breeder did not respond to registered U.S. Mail detailing the diagnosis. Obviously no explanation, let alone offer of refund has been forthcoming.

CHD results in early development of arthritis, pain and loss of mobility, frequently necessitating early euthanasia of the afflicted animal. Our dog Riley, will not climb steps or run more than 20 yards. He cannot play with other dogs becasue he can't keep up. He can't go on hikes or runs with us. It's sad to know Riley won't have the long life we'd hoped for.

Inquiries made to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) shows neither of the puppy's parents were assessed for CHD prior to or since breeding, which is considered essential to responsible dog breeding.

We have met several other owners of Canyon Meadows Golden Retrievers, at least one of which also has a dog with CHD. I would recommend a prospective puppy buyer seek the advice of a veterinarian before visiting any breeder. In any case, Canyon Meadows puppies should be avoided.
