CAMCO sent a collection letter stating, "---your ITT/Household Finance account# XXX which was formerly held by The Sagres Co. has been purchased by Capital Acquisition and Management Co., ---You owe $2500. plus interest etc". I did infact have an outstanding debt with ITT/Household Finance, and at one time The Sagres Company did send me a letter trying to collect.

The debt was fresh in my mind because I just recently finished paying off this outstanding balance with another collection agency. I am forwarding a copy of my "Paid In Full Notice" to Camco, who didnt believe me when I called them.

I have (X2)different letters from (X2)seperate collection agencies, both stating that they have purchased all right, title and interest on an old debt (both agencies show same account #). Could it be possible that the debt information was sold twice? I noticed most of the people getting ripped off are from California, The Sagres Co. is based in California- could there be a connection?

As much as it is obvious that CAMCO is a complete an utter ripoff, I will always spread the truth about all collection agencies. CAMCO probably DID buy the debt, but it was bought before it was paid off. Unfortunately, it is common practice for accts to be outdated by the time the collectors start calling. Because collection agencies are allowed to go after debts that were not PAIN IN FULL INCLUDING INTEREST, companies will sell an acct if it is not paid off in a certain amount of time in an effort to collect more for the debt. Did you settle for a certain amount with your former creditor? If you had, CAMCO can go after the balance legally. So even if they finally acknowledge you paid in full receipts from your former creditor, they can re-assess the acct and still bill you for the balance. AWFUL CYCLE. The majority of honest collection agencies will accept your paid in full and close the acct. NOT CAMCO OR HOUSEHOLD.

These accts are sold so often and so frequently that it is difficult to first know the original creditor, and then know who to pay! Each collection agencies will say PAY THEM, but it takes sometimes MONTHS for the right information to filter between companies to stop the harrassment. Normally, its not that the agency is committing fraud going after you twice. It's that the company before them didn't update their files and sold the acct before it was paid off so the payment history is inaccurate. CAMCO is a whole different story of course, but I suspect that they bought your debt legally and is trying to collect on a out-dated debt based on out-dated information.

Send your prove via REGISTERED MAIL along with your cease and desist letter. CAMCO may have bought the debt legally, but it doesn't give them the right to harrass you until the prove gets in the system properly. The people calling you have automated phone systems that prompt the next call. It may be that they know nothing about you but the info on the acct. They are trained to be pigs and treat honest people like you like dirt. they don't believe anyone until the info is in the system. Regardless of whether you are lying or not, IT DOESN'T GIVE THEM THE RIGHT TO HARRASS YOU. I got a very nice woman who called me from NCO 11 years ago. She treated me with respect and kindness and I knowledged the debt and paid it. It never went near my credit report because she said that it wouldn't if I paid it in a timely manner. You know what? She didn't lie to me or cheat me! Imagine that, an honest collection agency!

Normally, it is not a conspiracy to defraud people. Wrong info is in their systems all the time because they do skip traces on people and sometimes there is more than one Kathy Barber in Philadelphia, PA! It is their job to prove this debt is yours, not your job. And CAMCO would try to prove it, if the paperwork wasn't all gone after all those years! They have bad info all the time. They wouldn't have to go to such illegal lengths to collect on these time-barred debts and threaten people if they had the paperwork. But it is a competitive business they are in.

Good luck to you and get your letters in ASAP. And remember, they can legally go after the debt until you prove to them its paid off! But in the meantime, watch your credit report, and don't waste your time telling them over and over again that its paid off. They will ignore you or get on the phone with a fake three way call saying that the other person on the line is from Household and they say its not paid off. Household is shady too!
