Capital Billing Service sent me a letter on 9/15/15 to collect a fraudulent debt of $999.00 for Reader's Subscription.  I was immediately suspicious since the letter did not tell who the debt was for. I did call and was able to get through unlike others who filed reports. I spoke to Neil Landon, Ext 104 who talked at the speed of light.  He said that I allegedly subscribed to a magazine service in 2012 for $49.95 per month with a 2-year commitment and I allegedly paid for 2 months. Said this was a verbal commitment and that I needed to respond to their letter within 30 days to cancel.  He said that I could dispute the debt, but if I did I would not get the very generous settlement that they were offering - a "whopping" $399.00 off the bill.

He at first said he would send me another request with the company information there and gave me the number to contact them about details. Capital Billing Service had my name, address, birthdate, phone number, and the last four digist of my Master Card credit card number.  I do not have a MC credit card and never use my MC debit card as I have had issues in the past with fraud.

I sent them a dispute registered, requiring a signature from them.

Readers Subscription is not a company I have ever heard of or done business with. I could not find any information about them on the Internet, suspicious in and of itself.

My understanding is that if I did not respond to Capital Billing Service's letter I would be held liable for this bogus debt and have my credit ruined. I will send my rebuttal to the credit services should they actually contact them to attempt to ruin my credit.

Eighteen complaints this year alone (all since April) tells me that this is indeed a scam!
