Complaint Review: Capital One Bank

Capital One Bank Ridiculous and outrageous late charge ripoff Richmond Virginia

  • Reported By:

I had a balance on my credit card of $14.95. The statement got buried on my desk and I mailed the payment a day late. OK, So yes I was late. I always pay my bills on time and have excellent credit, this one just got over looked.

When the next statement arrives it says that I'm past due by a month and to pay now. OK so my payment and their statement crossed in the mail. Also on the statement is a late charge of $29.00. That got my attention. A $29.00 late charge on a $14.95 past due balance.

So I've been with Capital One for years but this does not make me happy. So I call their 800 # and tell them I want to close my account and of course they ask why and I tell them the story. I'm not going to do business with a company that rips you of with unreasonable late charges. So they tell me that I have to talk to an account specialist and transfer me. After 15 minutes of being on hold listening to the annoying banjo hold music I hang up. I call them back and end up on hold again with the same music. That's like adding insult to injury. So I wrote them a letter instead and shredded my card.

Just a heads up to look out for Capital One.

Wait for someone that can help

I USE to work for Capital Oee as s supervisor, just recently quit actually. If you call in, speak to a supervisor & it is your first offense it will be waived. Depending on who you get, you may have to push a little, but it can be waived. Trust me, I worked for the company & I know their policy. You will need to wait for a supervisor in most cases as normal customer service isn't able to waive most fees. You need to make sure you habe enough time to hold for a long long time though, unless you are calling really early in the AM or really late at night. The # for a supervisor is 800-707-0489.

Read the IMPORTANT Parts of the T&C

Whenever I get Terms and Conditions, no, I don't read the whole thing.

But I do know to look for the IMPORTANT parts, such as late fees, over the limit fees, and all the other money related items.

It's pretty easy to pick those parts out.

Common sense

Are you actually saying that a reasonably intelligent person who has managed to obtain good credit doesn't possess enough common sense to know that a late payment will result in a late fee?

I'm not saying that the high fees that credit card companies charge for late payments can't be outrageous. I'm saying that you should have known that paying late would result in a late fee. I honestly don't understand how you can be surprised by this.

I think it's great that you have elected to cease doing business with Capital One. They are real snakes (and by the way, no I don't work for them! Yikes!) But when you say you're no longer doing business "with this kind of company" does this mean that you have elected to cease doing business with ALL credit card companies? Because Capital One is not the only snake out there -- they're part of a club. Ever hear of universal default? At least Capital One never practiced that, unlike Citigroup and Chase (who only this week announced they were doing away with it due to public and governmental pressure).

Don't ignore those T&C Thanks Mark

You pointed out the essence of the complaint. Shady companies will rip you off simply because they KNOW that the majority of honest hard working Americans don't read those tiny teeny lengthy fine print articles in the T&C's.

This isn't about my fine credit that you seem to take issue with. It's about Capital One that seems to have predatory policies. Read the complaints. Doesn't bother me anymore as I don't do business with this kind of company. Do you work for Capital One? Sounds like it.

You would have received the late fee even if your balance due was $1.49. Receiving the late fee has nothing to do with how much or how little your balance is. It has to do with your payment being late.

For someone who has such great credit, I'm very surprised that this is news to you. Also, you don't have to read all the teeny-tiny fine print to know about late fees. Common sense tells you that if you don't pay a bill on time, you will get some sort of penalty. Also, the fee schedule is included in the credit card offer. If you chose not to read it, then you really can't complain about it.

Like the other person said, I don't really see what the "rip-off" here is. You acknowledge that you didn't pay on time and you got a late fee for it. If your balance had been $1,495 instead of $14.95, would you be saying that it's a rip-off then, too?

Who said that I wasn't civil and that I talked to them like a dog? If anything they treated a long time customer like a dog. And judging from the lengthy pages of complaints on this company I'd say they treat all customers like dogs.

Ive been with Capital One for years,I forgot a payment by 1 day and I got hit with the late charge! I called,Was civil and they waived the late charge! If its a one time deal and you werent late before, and you dont talk to the operator like a dog, most card companys will do this!

Yes it's my own fault

It is my own stupid fault for not reading the entire little 20 page pamphlet all in fine print. I should have done that and I would have seen that they were going to charge me 100% interest as a penalty for being a few days late. Silly me.

I also should have done a little homework on them such as check this site and I would have seen 30+ pages of complaints on them. I have AAA credit and I've done a considerable amount of business with this card company and now see how they treat their customers.

Also, I did attempt to call them twice and was on put on indefinite hold. Personally I'm not going to do business with this kind of company. If you want to that's your business.

Why would this be a ripoff?

I don't understand, you were late on your payment and you were charged a late fee, as outlined in your terms and conditions. It doesn't matter if your balance was 14.95 or 1495.00, it was still late.

If you had been civil, and asked them to remove the late fee, they would've done so, provided you haven't made a habit of being late in the past.

As far as this particular incident being a ripoff, you are completely in the wrong. Every credit card charges a late fee, except Citi... if you're late, but use your card before the billing cycle is up, they will wave the late fee.
